I've recently discovered that the hydraulic clutch on my 08 SM510R would begin to leak every now and then due to overfilling from clutch wear. Is this expected from this type of system? Any particular reason why it was designed like this and not like a regular hydraulic system like a braking system?

mine leaked a little from lid.. wasnt that tight but shoudlnt leak normally.. seal not seated proplerly is most likely reason..check it, it shouldnt leak !

So as the clutch plates wear, what is supposed to happen to the fluid? I ended up draining some and it's been alright though there is still a tiny amount coming out.

Seems to be seeping from around the lid or rubber boot where the lever goes in.
