Being told my left knee has this...no MRI yet...but the Ortho in working says it is so....Do these always require surgery?

Couldn't happen at a better time....flying to see the monster in law for thanks giving....and it will be a dry house.....

I tore mine last year. Preping for Baja. It was sore as hell but we did the 500. Afterwards Doctor said 50/50 on surgery or not. She said it will heal in 3-4 months but would be painful. Same with surgery. I took the approach of if it will heal on its own, I will let it. I did not want the Doctor inside my knee unless it was absolutely necessary. my doctor agreed and now it is Ok, no issues at all.
    Sorry about the dry house.

Depends on the MRI results, I guess. Years ago I tore mine and didn't have surgery. It got better, but the pain still comes ...didn't completely go away.
Sorry to hear about your dry Thanksgiving, hopefully you don't have to visit for Xmas too!

My surgeon said mine wouldn't repair. I don't know if that's because it was bad or if he was drumming up work. Mine was ok for a bit but then it folded under itself & the pain was pretty sweet. I pushed for fast surgery after that. So if it's a big year, I'd get it cut. There's a bit of recovery time but no ongoing pain after that. I hope your scan results show it's not too bad.

I was told when I tore mine for the 5th time, that the results are the same with surgery as without. It healed...SLOWLY. It sucks but it's waaaaay better than when I ruptured my right Quad tendon! 3 trips to the OR to get it repaired(2 years of rehab). That sucked donkey balls! I wouldn't recommend that one.:(

be careful for both legs/knees until then, may not be torn, sometimes possible for it to heal itself. Pray big (can't hurt) and hope for really good news from the MRI !

Deffinately have it looked at. My right inside meniscus got damaged when I was 13 and the dr.s said it was growing pains. Fast forward to when I was 28 and had an MRI done on it. They found most of it was hamburger meat looking. After the first surgery, my knee hurt all the time vs. now and then. Second surgery 3 years later made it a little more bearable, but the doc took almost all of it out. Cadaver meniscus is an option, but my doc said he doesn't recommend it due to the high rejection rate of it. He said its like 9 out of 10 people end up having it redone every couple of years.

I feel for you. My knee has ended a few riding trips early because of extrutiating pain from such a small piece of Meniscus. Good luck on your MRI results.

Had mine repaired when they did my ACL reconstruction (patella tendon). I'm pretty sure they can scope that with limited recovery time if its just a torn piece. If there is little left, they have a new inject-able gel you can look into that acts as a cushion. Good Luck

I think it depends a lot on your "stature". The knee joint isn't always a lot bigger in larger people. By that I mean a 300 LB person's knee isn't twice the size as a 150LB guy. A larger person will have a harder time with a natural rehab, and may find that it re-injures easier. Also important is your sporting activities off the bike. So take your honest stature into consideration when deciding, on top of the MRI results and the Doctor's recommendations. Get a second opinion and tell them you are leaning towards no surgery (weather you are or are not, to help them be less money-driven and more honest in their evaluation). And listen to your body. If it is feeling a lot better, it is healing on its own. From experience, I'm 45 yrs, 155lbs, and both my ACL's are snapped and retracted and have healed both meniscuses without surgery. They work pretty darn good and don't hold me back. Of course, EVERY injury is different so take all opinions with a grain of salt. I've seen surgeries go bad, though it seems the practice has improved a lot in the past 20 years.

Best of luck to you. And I'm truly sorry....for your dry Tday!

My brother inlaw got his "fixed" three weeks ago. Suffered with it for almost that long. Pain is already alleviated and he is deer hunting this week. But on second thought he would have hunted if he had to crawl. But seriously way better.

i had my meniscus done in the spring. they took some pics of it and advised i do a clean-up surgery. was getting swollen and i couldnt bend it completely. after surgery i could walk the next day altho the wife was yelling at me. my knee felt better right after the surgery and a lil pain comes and goes but it has felt good since

Had mine scoped as my knee would lock up while peddling a rehab bike and needed a quick slap to unlock it. I have little or no ACL in either knee but still race. Surgery is a last resort for me as I would only fxck it up again as we ride twice a week and all winter on the ice. Battling a 4 year old MCL tear now but feeling better and can kick start my YZ again. LOL. Keep as much cartilage in your knee as you can, it don't grow back.

I had a tear in my good knee recently and my doctor recommended leaving it alone. The pain gradually went away over 8 or 9 months and now I never notice a thing wrong. Guess it was a small tear and the doc was spot on. Left knee, another story. No ACL, no PCL, no cartilage, transplanted ligaments, all happened in about 1972. Still using it and don't plan on a replacement unless it stops working. Just keep it moving.....

Bottom line is actually simple. The more your inner knee capsule is disrupted from surgery the more likely you will suffer negative long term symptoms.

I had my knee scoped a month ago. Was walking w/out cruches two days later. Full recovery usually takes a month or two. I tore my ACL about twenty years ago and never did get it fixed.
The doctor said that the ACL is not a concern anymore but I've got arthrites on my knee and will probably need a knee replacement in ten years.

I've had 3 meniscus surgeries. I had one where I was racing 10 days later. Dr said resume normal activity at 10 days......so I did. Knee held up but was pretty sore. Other 2 surgeries the doctor had to scrape and clean up the back of my knee cap. Different story on those 2 surgeries it hurt like hell and it took a full month to recover.
