Mid pipe heat sheild insulation.

Because I'm not real bright, I was tooling around the house the other day with shorts on. I was just doing some low speed tight turning. Just trying to get a good feel for the bike, the throttle, and its general characteristics. At some point, I burned the crap out of my leg on that rearward "mid-pipe" heat shield.... the one that contacts the pipe ( )

I've got a P3 carbon header pipe guard coming, so I'm good all the way back to that section of mid-pipe that connects to the muffler. I just need something to put behind that metal "guard". I was thinking of using this:

Any thoughts or other suggestions?

Man...I feel for you. That area get's really hot...went through a couple of pants to figure it out! Why don't you just complete the look with the P3 Mid Pipe Heat Guard?

to put it bluntly... b/c I'm cheap. lol. I could do that, but it seems to me that piece is WAAAAY over-priced. It's nearly the same cost as the main pipe guard, and is about 1/8th of the size.

The stock mid-pipe guard is a joke...it doesn't even cover the whole area. When you start using heat wraps, they get worn out looking and fray and come off and generally look like crap unless you change it all the time.

How about a Motosportz one...less than half the price?

Yes , Plus its super weak, mine broke off after something like 2 rides, without any impacts.
PS the new hard parts catalog has a KTM style black plastic one. So there is another choice now available.

Uptite makes the best one IMO.

Hmmm.. Does the Motosportz one stay far enough away to not conduct the heat from the pipe? I like the carbon fiber for that application b/c it won't conduct the heat like steel/alum...

Yeah, I keep bending my stocker out and after a few minutes it's back against the pipe.

Second pic is Uptite mid-pipe shield on a 2008 TE 250. Should work for your bike. I notice heat but haven't burned anything.

I think George just put this on when he set up the bike. Never saw a charge so I think he was just making it right in his mind.

I saw the husky one on a bike, unfortunately it was broken.

Lots of guard options for sure.....I would recommend which ever one you go with....also cover the pipe first with header wrap...just to keep the heat soak down in that area in general..and also for the sake of the airbox..

Yup. You can see it in place on the photo in the other thread that andyman linked to. The bolt through the front provides the main attachment, and the zip tie holds the upper part of the guard to the sub-frame rail (the back of the guard is shaped to fit around the rail with a flange above and below so it can't move up or down once it's tied).

Had one of those guards on my 450 since day one and no problems at all with it; no sign of it coming loose, and I haven't burnt anything in that area. The plastic is fairly rigid but the sort that will flex if you catch it on something, then spring back into shape. Not all that thick but it feels pretty tough.

Has anyone tried having the mid-pipe ceramic coated? I looked at a few websites and some were claiming up to a 70% reduction in surface temp. Based on the size of the mid-pipe, it looked like it would be very cheap. I even saw a do it yourself product that was sold for $14 (for a small quanity, but enough for this)

I put the P3 guards on the 310 two weeks ago and road two full days out in the PA rocks. I was amazed at how much heat protection they gave and how well they stood up to my biffs.

After a couple pairs of pants melted through, the cost doesn't seem unreasonable. That mid-pipe AND the header with the stock shield will cost you in either pants or skin or.....both if the beast lays on you to the left after a get off.
