Funny story... Advertised my 04 CR125 local as I will not need it with the 09 here. The guy I bought it from saw the ad and wants it back. He said his WR250 is not near as fun and he dearly misses the 125. Funny chit.
3+ years ago when I got my '02 WR125, I figured my beloved '00 WR250 would still be a regularly ridden mount. I started riding the 125 right after my knee surgeries and loved it. When my knee felt better I got out the 250 rode it around the yard and put it away. I never rode it again and finally sold it last year. The guy who bought it, loves it and I loved it, but a 125 is more fun!
weather is permitting, finally!!!,,,let the ride reports begin!! trail rides/competition!! Ajax can kick in a few reports as well,,,I am most curious from the PNW zone,,,, but welcome the NE (NY zone) woods reports. Good on you, go get the new new 09s on the trail!! R
All this talk of 125's sort of makes me want to try one again. I always rode 250cc mx bikes, but back in the '92-96 era I spent a few seasons on 125's. I started swapping my CR250 with my buddy's CR125 and I fell in love. Then another friend blew up his 92 RM125 and gave it to me since he was off to college. I fixed it and then spent the next few seasons on it and then a new 94. I eventually tired of top end and clutch replacements and went back to 250's. I've never actually ridden a true woods-purpose 125, but I'd like to feel the difference. I've gotten to the point my 260lb. EXC actually feels light, so it has to be a lot of fun. I'm pretty much determined that whatever I get next uses pre-mix.
'08 cr125 Yep the 125 is a simple joy to ride...had many 300's (ktm, gasgas)and 250f's..,get it on the boil, and it's hard to beat in the woods
Nice to have you here at CafeHusky, scrambler I have a `97 Honda CR125 that I bought new in the end of `96. I love that thing! Everyone that rides it has a great time on it, but they all say it takes a lot of energy to ride it correctly in the woods. I agree. I really like riding it because it keeps me from getting too lazy from riding my bigger bikes. WoodsChick
Would love to go back to 125's, but being 220 lbs. and 5' 10", I fear that I'm simply too big for 125's now. Anybody ride one that is my size?
I am a old man 52 6 ft tall and 200 all dressed out and ready to ride no problem against the open class .That is why my bike runs the # 1 plate My son 24 6 ft 3 220 with out gear so add atleast another 25 pounds for all his gear He has no problem either and is leading in points this year for the AMA National Hare and hounds After getting off a Husky 510 Husky 125 is just completly different then a jap 125 .It works great for a taller and bigger guy .Ride one and you will see One more plus they are 1/2 the price of a open class 4 stroke but twice the fun
On my Husky 125 i replace the piston once a year That is over 1000 miles of Desert racing. As for the clutch it went 2 1/2 years before i replaced it and it was still good. But i have to spend my husky bucks on something The Husky is just better lasting then a jap bike
When I get to try Norm's out(if he'll let me at the gathering this year) will make up my mind if I get a 125 again. Had a Jap Crap 125 for a couple years a long time ago and am wondering what a newer one rides like. Rode a friends 04 Honda CR 125 a couple times last summer and it was a nice little bike. It was pretty easy to throw that bike around compared to the 450.
Yeah I'd suspect you're right on about the Husky quality. The RM's of that era were notorious for soft clutch baskets. The high maintenance needs I experienced back then were primarily due to those weak baskets, my riding style, and where I rode, which was 95% mx tracks. Many of those tracks were deep sand, so I was constantly fanning the clutch and tapped out. I'd eat up a basket a season. After the tangs on the basket got notched I'd get one filing and then a few more hours before it was completely toasted. Warped plates and all that fun stuff. I'd wear out 2 sets of rings per season as well. The pistons lasted better, but I always threw a new one in anyway. I'm sure if I rode it differently I'd have got a lot more hours out of both. The fact I was 200lbs no doubt added to the problem. I still weigh the same today, but I'd expect to get a lot more hours out of 125 built for and used in the woods. Besides, I wouldn't mind tearing into a 2-stroke again once in a while anyway. I miss the simplicity big time.
more 125 fodder, Took my boy's freshly rebuild top end and PV fixed and serviced forks with seals 97 RM125 out for a known test loop to feel the 125 vibe. I installed a Steahly flywheel weight previously to this thing to smooth it out. My hat is off to all of you guys for the 125 vibe, my slow reflexes and tank arsed weight make riding the the 125 an overwelming task,,oh man the corner speed is amazing and she feels like a mtn bike on steroids, plus the conv forks of the 97 Suz are super smooth,,,,but I scared myself way too many times on that little monster!! More power to you guys for going to the tiddler class. I just love em from a distance. Go get em 125 riders, I got yer backs but I will just watch from the sidelines or from the trail prolly from behind. Enjoy the ride.
PS the clutch is draggy on this bike and I filed the heck out of the basket and it made a big difference but man that basket is like made out of lead it is so soft as mentioned. I tell the kids to start in 2nd and always go to neutral before kicking it. ".....The RM's of that era were notorious for soft clutch baskets. The high maintenance needs I experienced back then were primarily due to those weak baskets,..... "
That's why I like an 85. Like a 125, only smaller and weighs in at 145 pounds dry. Makes me feel like a pro even though I'm slow.
That was my exact reponse to my, now gone, 2003 KX 125...scary fast power when you ride it where the power is! I felt like I was holding on for dear life through the woods and it actually tired me out! That being said, the bike was set-up for MX and I don't think I gave it a fair chance. I think Kelly is doing it to get his edge back after riding a Cadillac. I still wanna try the '09 WR 125 just to make sure! David
That is part of it. The fun factor is also through the roof. Robert rides much different stuff than we do.
