Just got my first set of real ice tires! Fredette set me up with a Motoz rear and an ED-11 front....they look sweet! I've seen this set up in action and they hook!
It's a Tractionator X circuit rear and Bridgestone ed11 front both have glued in harley tire liners and glued in screws. It's so stiff I cant finish getting the rear on with the tools I have...not enough leverage!
Will give a ride report next Sunday! This Sunday is -25 with wind chill so you won't see this guy outside! I think the tire said off road use only. For what they cost they will only see ice until they are totally wore out, which I hope is 5-10 years from now!
I run Jeff's tires and they last forever if you keep them covered anytime they are not on ice. I know he started working with knobs so let us know how they work. Now you just out for fun or racing ?
Just for fun but the guys I ride with want me to do some 3hr ice race in Wisconsin in a couple weeks....we'll see???
The wraps keep the screws sharp and make a safe way to store the tires in the off season. I don't so much as roll the bike around the garage without them. The boys and I had a short safety meeting about shooting the race budget on a trip out this season for one of the long races. Everyone wants to but nobody is going LOL.
Jeff told me these Motoz tires are great confidence inspiring tires for people who ride in perfect and more importantly, non perfect conditions or slightly powdery ice ( i.e. not plowed every so often like at a race). Sounds like they get tons of traction. I've read some guys running really high tire PSI ( 25-30psi) and I've heard of guys running more normal 10-16 psi not sure whats right or the best but I have 16 in them now and will see next weekend I guess??
Knobbies are great for beginners as they can run on any ice condition but work best on a 3.5" rim. Yesterday I road in 6" of unplowed snow on the lake as a goof and felt like I was riding in the woods, had total control. Don't try that with a Kenda rear. Many people road my YZ yesterday with knobbies and altho it won't run with a Kenda equipped bike coming out of the corners it is extremely safe and a blast. Go into the corner with the bike wide open then just throw the bike down and carve, cool feeling. I'm still searching for the ultimate rear knobbie, been at it about 35 years. Road a CRF470 with a Kenda and M59 tires I built last year and spanked my buddies pretty good, fun wheelying out of the corners leaned over. I was gunna by the damn bike but the local pro blew it up testing my tires, brand new rebuild. Cam gear bolt backed out, no lockite. The engine builder admitted his mistake and is totally bummed. Me too.
So the verdict! These tires will best a Kenda type tire pretty much anywhere any time in most conditions! Soooo good soooo much traction! I can pick any line fluff or not and these things just go! Road a kenda made by Fredette and think the only time they would be better is if you have hockey ice and even then its probably even. That's from a novice/intermediate point of view. Worth every penny! Several guys now have these and even with AMA screws they refer to them as the cheater tire.
My buddies doing the 3hr this weekend just took off there Fredette kenda and replaced it with the motoz because they like it so much.
I never had any luck with the staggered screw pattern over the years on the front tires, maybe I'm not angling them like I should. Only one screw ends up doing all the work for some reason and the staggered screw next to it just floats. You can tell by pulling the screws out of the tire and you will see what screws are doing the most damage to the knob. Staggering the screws in the back works great.
