I'm plaining on doing a few AMA National Enduros for the first time this year. Problem is I'm not sure if I need anything special for them, like a route chart.

I understand they don't do time keeping any longer, but I've seen some of the riders still have the stuff for it.

What do you really need to do one?

Good questions Motorhead. I've signed up for Sumter but don't think I'll be able to do it, but need the same info for the future from those who have been racing in the modern era of enduro racing.

Not sure how fast you guys are? But most of the test sections you will probably have to wait in line for. If you can do them in time then
twist it and have fun. I dont think to many people burn a check in this format.

You need a spark arrestor. Thats it.

I still put on my computer as I like to know how much time I have at the gas stops and the pauses.

I will be in Sumter and Georgia for sure. I hope to do the Missouri, Maine, Michigan and Indiana rounds.

When it comes to NEPG races, the route sheet is basically a "nice to know" and it's moreso only used by the old school enduro racers that used them on a regular basis in the past. Now, just show up at the start about 10 minutes before your minute, then follow the crowd from there. No special equipment necessary at all. I'll be at Sumter, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee for sure. Maybe TX, MO and Maine.

Like they said.Sparky and speed. They WILL NOT let you burn a check. I mean at the check in..the crew will not let you pass through the tansponder chute unless you really bull thru. Then the sections are designed to even take from the AA guys so twist it til you come back out the nexxt chute and repaet like 6 times......easy.

So, do I just want to have a watch on or on the bars? I guess I need to be at certain places at certain times?

What about extra fuel, will my stock WR tank do or should I run a big tank?

BTW- I'm looking at doing Tn., Mo. and In..

You shouldn't need a large tank. I think the rule is no more than 35 miles without a gas stop. So, if you can do that at race pace on one tank, which you should be able to do, then you're fine. No need for a watch. When you finish one section you'll follow the arrows and people to the next section and just wait until to go until your number is up.

There will be someone on your row that knows what they're doing. They'll probably have a computer and/or a roll chart. Introduce yourself and let them know it's your first enduro and I'm sure they'll help....but really, you don't need much help. Just keep an eye on the rows in front of you and when those people line up you need to be behind them. Sounds more complicated than it is.

Ha! When you said WR I was thinking Yamaha.....I'll be on a HUSQVARNA WR as well and I've done many Nat'l Enduro's with my WR and I only have a stock tank. You'll be fine with the stock tank. You may want to bring two gas cans as there may be two gas stops.

What class are you racing and what row are you on? I'm on row 9.

40+ B. I don't know what row, I left the row blank, because I'll be coming by myself. Figured I could just be a row filler.

You can find the row info here...

40+B is a great class. I know tons of people in it. And it's a very big class. Let me know what row you're on and I may know someone on your row or close to you......I think I'm really just curious where you are.

FYI, the Burnt Gin Harescramble is this weekend and it is the same trail that will be one of the enduro sections. I'm pretty sure I'm going so I'll post up next week and let you know how it goes.

Is Glenn Kearney not racing the first round? Did not see his name on the list.
From the 2010 Pro riders list on the National Enduro site he has row 37A for the series.

Yes, Glenn will be there. There's an open spot on the list at row 37. There are many pros not listed and some open spots on rows 20 to 50 also. Mike Lafferty isn't listed either and you can bet your ass he'll be there getting waxed by Russell Bobbitt!!! :) .

I just thought that the list was complete since it was "sold out" as I call it or as they call it "event full" a few months ago. All I can say is "Go Glenn Go"

They hold a spot from row 21-50 for the Pro class riders at every event.

If you have a Pro # , you are guaranteed a spot.

Misunderstanding, I'm not signed up for the first one. I've got an entry in for TN..

Oops, you entered the wrong one! TN is much harder in my opinion. But, none the less, it's fun. Many will tell you that The Alligator in FL is their least favorite, but for me it's TN....not a fan of that one, but I'll be there.

If you have a transponder from another series you might want to take it, you may be able to use it and save a few dollars. Are they still using the tube looking ones?
  20. ARod2000 Husqvarna
    AA Class

    Location:
    Georgia
Yeah, they're still using the typical tube type transponders. And you can rent one if you don't have one.

I think TN is harder than the rest because there's a gnarly section that I'd describe as a "frozen ocean" (think waves frozen in time). It's basically a planted pine forrest where the seeds weren't sewn in. So the rows of trees have a little hump going down the rows....and of course, you ride single track all through this. I just don't like that section at all. And the rest of the race is pretty challenging with rocks, hills and such. Sumter is all sand with a little elevation change. The Alligator is more soft beach sand than Sumter and it is even more flat and a massive amount of pretty big sand whoops. Also, at the Alligator, they can't cut anything per the landowner (I'm guessing is the state). So, that means you're riding single track through palmetto bushes and you can't see very far ahead because vegetation hangs into the trail. I love it, it's a really unique challenge. But, admittedly, pretty much everyone I know hates The Alligator race with a passion. Cherokee is probably my favorite as it's fairly diverse with hardwood bottoms that you can fly through and also tighter pine sections that flow well. But, cherokee lost some land this year to clear cutting so they're going to have a cut over section. Even more diversity at that race, but I don't think racing through a clearcut has any place in an ENDURO.

They're all great. TN is just more of a challenge for me, but I still like it. NEPG is my favorite racing, way more than GNCC....if you can't tell :)
