I walked out of the shop with the bike and the Cert of Origin and that's it. What else will I need at the DMV. Haven't written the check yet so no BILL OF SALE, although I know the price. I did this a few years ago but forget the details.
CHP to do the vehicle inspection on what I think is the W-R 12 form or something like that and then AAA if you have it. You can get the form from AAA or CHP I think. You will need to call CHP to make and appointment. No need to dirty your hands with CA-DMV. What did you buy G-man?
2012 TE310 I remember the DMV going outside to look at the certs and numbers on my 2008. Just can't remember if I had a bill of sale or just gave them the figure when they asked. They never made me test the turn signals or lights. I got the license plate right then and there at the DMV, unlike with a car where they come n the mail.
Nice! I never deal with DMV if I don't have to. Everyone has AAA I thought. CHP just looks over the numbers also, no testing of anything, Although the Officer a friend of mine said he would need to test drive the SM as a joke. Same thing with AAA, they hand you the plates right over the counter. Did that with my 08 TE450 I got from Up-tite and my 08 SM610 I got from Halls. No BOS needed, just the Certificate and tell them the price.
AAA said no, they didn't have access to the codes.... Wasn't too bad....2.5 hours and I was done. I think one guy held me up as he was standing at the counter for 1/2 hour and as soon as he left they called my number BO87. They'd called BO86 30 min earlier. It's an odd mix of people working there, some smiling and pleasant and others trudging through ..I thanked them all cheerfully as if coming to the DMV was the best part of my day. I believe as I read the AAA site stuff that they do have some services like verification avail at certain locations. Going to the CHP couldn't have saved me much time over the DMV as it only took about 15 min to verify the bike and that was just part of my overall wait.
I've never had to deal with DMV when buying a new bike in CA, street or dirt. The dealer has always done it for me...no different than buying a car.
George quit doing it when Crash died and there was no one to answer the phone at the shop if he went to the DMV..... The dealer charges for this so it's not like I wasn't getting paid indirectly.
I recently registered an ATV that I bought in Oregon. They wanted; Cert of Orig & bill of sale. Inspection of the numbers, and pay the "use tax". Walked out with the green sticker. I sat on my duff for 1.75 hours watching the numbers on the TV. The actual process took < 30 minutes. This was at the Fremont office of the DMV. If you live in the east bay do NOT go to P-town DMV. They are complete alpha-hotels.
So you bought this bike in another state? I recently bought a brand new toyhauler from another state. I took my bill of sale and statement of origin to the local DMV office. They started the processing of the paperwork and gladly took my money, but made me bring the trailer in for them to check the VIN on it and make sure that it matched the VIN on the paperwork.
Sadly enough I found out today that CA/DMV took away the AAA privilege to register "NEW" vehicles with the MSO/CERT and Verification from CHP. They will do previously registered vehicles but "NOT NEW", they will do "NEW" trailers though with the MSO/CERT. I also found out that CA/DMV gave AAA back the RED/GREEN sticker access for registration. So in other words, as long as the "vehicle/bike" has been previously registered street or ohv you are good and new trailers/haulers as well. This changed this year and I had no idea. Sorry for the miss-information but they did it in 08,09 changed the rules in 11.
Appointments are 2-3 day wait. Street legal bike.....I want it now. Besides , it's the DMV, they have to inspect the numbers of a new registration bike.....a line there is different from a line inside.
Made an appointment today at 12:00 and got one at 10:40 tomorrow, not bad! I already did the CHP friday morning for the verification so I shouldn't need a re-inspection at DMV. At least I hope not because I am only bringing paper to DMV.
HA! Ya, that's happened to me, too. We are like kids on xmas morning when it comes to our new bikes. IS IT TIME YET?!? I have to admit that there are 3 different city DMV's around me... I just call around and get the earliest appt.
Typically they just mail it in. Then a couple of weeks later you get your plate and reg. in the mail.
Well that was fun. The illustriouse State worker at DMV registered the bike as OHV. I went to window one and the employee there tried to give me a Green sticker! I marched right back over to the other window and had the guy fix it. 40 minutes later I walked out with a plate. AAA did a better job.
My '07 Te250 only came with a bill of sale. Well, to be more precise, two! One from the registered owner to the guy I bought it from and then one from my seller to me. I really thought I'd have a major problem but there's a form that the seller signs certifying the transactions. I went to DMV just before closing and I think the person behind the counter wanted to get home quick. I walked out with the plate and a big smile and the Pink came in the mail about a week later. I didn't have the bike with me because the seller certified the bike and not been either ridden or transported on public roads for over 4 years. They even waived some of the back penalties (the registration expired Oct '07) because of the signed certification. Best experience I've ever had at the CA DMV!!!
