I recently purchased a new TE630 and have about a hundred miles on it so far. It is in stock form (no PU kit and airbox restrictor in). I have owned a variety of street, MX, enduro and dual sport bikes over the past 35 years. I enjoy riding off road much more than riding on the road but the reality is I do about 50/50 due to the lack of nearby legal off road riding areas. My most recent dualsport was an ATK605 which I loved but it was not that much fun on the road and I found myself riding very little because of that. My Initial impressions of this bike are very positive so far. My pre-purchase concerns were about the weight and power. This bike feels much lighter than I thought it would and it feels like it is capable of making some very serious power. It feels about equal to the ATK in weight even though the ATK was lighter and it feels like it makes more power than the ATK even though it is still plugged up. It is my first fuel injected bike and even in stock form the fueling is still better than my other four stroke bikes were. I have only experienced one stall and one deceleration pop so far. This may be because the idle was set high from the factory (1800 – 2000). The idle is all over the place as others have reported and I plan to adjust it when I install the PU kit. The suspension is excellent, though I will reserve final judgment until I get it off-road. So far, I am thinking this could be the perfect dualsport and I am pleasantly surprised in just about every area. Fit and finish are good and nothing has fallen off yet (thanks to all the previous posters on what to watch out for!).
    Here are my questions:
1 – There is a removable oil screen on the RH side (part number 8000 74716, not the cartridge filter) that appears can only be cleaned by removing the engine crankcase cover. Is this correct ? Does this screen need to be cleaned with every oil change ?
2 – Is there an optimum time to install the PU kit? My plan at the moment is to ride it stock until about 300 miles, change the oil and filters, remove the air intake baffle and install the PU kit. At 600 miles I will take it back to the dealer to check the valves, change the oil again and put it on ibeat to check/optimize the EFI settings. Should I wait until I can get it on ibeat to install the PU kit ?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

I rode my 630 100 km's then i changed the oil and paper filter. At the same time i did the P/U as my dealer and the Norwegian import company told me to do it :).
Now i just had the 1000 km service, and it has a oil change, replace paper filter, clean the mesh filters, one under the clutch basket, and two on the other side of the motor just in front/under of the front sprocket. In the maintenace table it says on the 5000 km service only oil change. no filter change or cleaning. That is on the next 10 000 km service.

Hey, thanks grusomkis and Dan for the quick replies. I thought cleaning that filter screen might be on a different timeline. Maybe I will think about moving up the oil change/PU kit instead of waiting 300 miles as I originally planned.

FWIW, I took mine apart at around 3000 miles and that right side screen was spotless.

I plan on checking mine around each valve check interval.

jtemple, How was your case gasket on inspecting of the filter screen? Did it stay intact/stuck to one side and remain reusable? I have 1 new clutch side case gasket here, but there are now 2 TE 630's here. I have not checked either bike yet, but will.

It stayed intact, but I still replaced it. They're not cheap, either. I have pulled that cover twice and replaced the gasket. Once to clean that oil screen, and once to replace the clutch cover as part of a warranty fix. I had a leaking oil pump cover that wouldn't go away just by replacing the simple parts. I had to replace the whole clutch cover to get it to stop.

I have always been taught to replace those paper gaskets every time you separate the parts. The only gasket I'd re-use is the valve cover gasket, as it's a thick rubber one and reuse is intended.

I suppose if I was desperate, I'd try to reuse the gasket. you might end up with a leaky cover, though. You also take a risk that the leak lets debris into the engine. You don't want that.

I keep a spare gasket on hand. If I pull the cover, I use it and order up a new one.

Thanks, I was hoping this would be the case. I agree on replacing the gasket, I will order one to have on hand.

Just did my 1000km service. ALL the screens were clean with a tiny bit of gasket sealer on the screen pulled from the left side (under little cover). I won’t pull the clutch cover again. My buddies 09 KTM 450EXC was a different story. After 10 hours, the screen for the engine was partially plugged with crap and the tranny screen was totally plugged! I had 30 hours on the clock at 1000km and only the oil was getting dark. I also removed the air box restrictor, added the PU kit, and a iridium spark plug. WOW!

Old thread, but timely for me.
In first service on 10000klm i opened to clean all the metallic meshes, and found the one of the right hand side (8000 74716) to be chewed in the middle. Ordered, replaced, then reopened in 19000 service. Mesh was cut off near the end! I tried to order a new one and KTM said on april of 2017!! I run the motor without, and try to find a solution. Can' t find used ones, and i think SMW 650 doesn't even have the same pattern for its motor. Btw previously i owned a 610 for eleven years. Never checked that side of the motor, didn't even know the existence of metallic meshes in it.
Any idea would be appreciated and sorry for my bad english

Thanks for your concern Big Dom and the thread you provided. The broken end part dropped with the engine oil, i just forgot to mention it from my frustration. It's the 2nd filter that i destroyed and was lucky enough not to have major engine problem. Will i be lucky a 3rd time? Will see when i install again this thin little piece of metal sh#t. Thinking also about leaving the engine without. Tough decision. Btw very informative forum, wish i knew about it earlier.

I would be tempted to leave it out after two failures. I have not had mine out recently but wonder if one cannot wire the ends on as a precaution.
