I need to replace the old throttle and cable on my 420 and seek your expert guidance. I am looking at the stock replacement or a Magura 312 Duo throttle or ???

I want to replace the old stuff with something new and reliable so I don't kill myself in the woods.

    Thanks

Could you clarify what is or potentially is hazerdous about the gunner gasser type. The condition of the cable and dirt in that and the slide probably are the greatest risks. At some point street bikes went to two throtle cables one to open and one to close I suppose that would mean a totally different carb. I am not sure what comes on the newest two stroke huskies but that gunner gasser type is less sensitive just off idle than the domino they used in 2004.

I had my 420 do something strange once but it might have just built up to much energy in something spinning like the rear wheel or metal in the engine because I twisted it kind of hard. I really doubt the throtle didn't close as the grip was rotated back. Hopefully this isn't wrong, the idea with those it to twist the throtle enough so you don't slip that first gear clutch a lot.

The original throttle and cable were old and corroded so I bought a replacement cable and a "gunner gasser" throttle off eBay. Unfortunately these eBay parts turned out to be made from cheap materials and I had to cut off some of the throttle cable jacket to make it wirk on the stock Mikuni 38VM carb.

That worked OK so I could make sure that the bike is running properly after I reassembled the engine, but I think I better replace the throttle and cable with the correct high quality parts.

I have also replaced the carburetor body and am in the process of jetting it correctly now. The original carb slide, needle jet and needle were corroded into the throttle bore so I never got them out. I swapped the main jet and pilot jet into a used eBay carb and got the bike running, but not really well. At that point I was not aware that these Mikuni carbs even had a needle jet and an air jet. After reading through some of the jetting threads on this site I ordered a new slide, needle jet, needle, main and air jets but have not installed them yet. Hopefully I will get a chance over Christmas to install the new carb parts.

They do have a needle jet you use a punch and knock it out from the float bowl side. Once you ruin one trying to knock it out the other way put it in your jet box so you don't make that mistake again. I am not sure why modern stuff doesn't seem to use needle jets.

It is a shame the stuff is junk. I bought a new aftermarket one but it was before ebay existed and it was fine maybe even said Made in
Sweden. A little late now but if it isn't a lot that the cable jacket is too long I have filed down the threaded portion of the housing and the threaded end of the steel adjuster so that the steel piece threads in farther. That is enough to switch one out for the newer domino grips. The cable generally connects to the carb straight in with a little adjuster I know some applications have a tube with a bend which would definately mess with your cable selection. Maybe the ones for 40 mm carbs and the same throtle are longer insides.

Not much use to you but I just bought a new Venhill cable from Husky Sales U.K. and it fits like a glove
