I'd go with a rear (faux) trials tire, not a knobby. A MT43 or Mountain Hybrid has better street traction, and mostly better dirt traction- if (big "if") you're not a tire spinner. But downhill braking and mud will suck. Big bonus: 3-4x's better wear (respectively) than knobbies. Seriously. BTW, both tires are pretty big- bigger than a lot of knobbys.

In the front, a GT 216 AA fatty is great but spendy and heavy. A VE35 is pretty darn good at half the price, with good-to-great traction, and more life.

I've been going with the MT21 front and back - I like the 606 as well, just too hard for me to change tubes on a cool, or cold day with that tire.

VE35 isn't DOT legal for those that need street compliance.
