I finally pulled the trigger yesterday on the SM610 with 1400 miles as my first bike and holy cow I may need surgery to reattach my arms and that stock pipe has some bark when you get on it!

Here are some pictures I think they ended up sideways dont ask why because I am a noob :excuseme: Anyways the bike is bone stock besides some plastidip on the plastics (original black plastics underneath) and from what I have seen the smog can has been removed.

I was told the valves have not been checked since break in is that something i should do before anymore around town rides (still learning!) and maybe an oil change while I am working on the thing? If you guys could point me in the right direction on a tutorial or good thread on whatever must do's and donts and just things to watch out for I would really appreciate it.

Few other minor things that I have experienced with it and and may have already been answered or already have a fix:

    1. Neutral is hard to find while stopped and or I know false neutral is known problem.

    2. Clutched pulled in fully lurches slightly when put into 1st gear.

    3. can you click into neutral from 2nd gear or do you have to go down to 1st gear first, I know neutral is a half click up from 1st gear?

    4. Is letting the bike warm up for a few minutes a good thing before riding...I believe I read revving it while cold or even revving thumpers hard period in neutral or the clutch in bad?

    5. Im about 180 pounds with gear at the most and 5'10 and can almost flat foot the bike. I would like to maybe lower the back spring a hair just to have a bit more control starting out and maybe suspend it for my weight because it feels fairly soft when braking.

I am a total noob to motorcycles in general and I will probably have a ton more questions but I appreciate any feedback or opinions that you might have

    first..CONGRATULATIONS!!! :applause::banana::cheers::love::busted:
    As you list them
    1. yes
    2. yes, but you are cable and I'm trying to remember... i installed a hydraulic clutch.
    3. 1/2 down is the same as 1/2 up. no one cares how you find neutral! just get there when you need to!
    4. yes, yes and yes. Let it warm up without a load on it. if you do head out on a cold engine, east does it until it all comes to up temp
    5. I am not a suspension guy so don't know what to tell you about front springs, but would venture to say if you can touch both sides your better then good, don't worry about flat footing both sides. The other concept is slide your butt off to the left and flat foot with a bent knee to keep your right foot on the rear brake(because if your stopped you are already in neutral or first)!

Nice looking ride! I like the front fender paint scheme!!! It is a wonderful bike! I have one and it made me get a TE630 for dirt and adventure play! Enjoy your learning process!! Discovering a new bike is a great experience!!!

    nice bike.
I get my filters frommy local dealer.
    no real special tools.
I found a suspension shop to help me with the setup. ie. sag, preload, damping.

Start reading past threads , TONS of info on everything you need. ie. problems, fixes, mods. parts , excessories.

    where in ohio ya from?

Its usually better to try for neutral while slowing down before you stop, same applies to most bikes.
So just do a little tap dance with the gear lever before you stop.
Lurch into first is just from drag taking up play in the drive line and slack in the chain.
Im about 170 pounds kitted up and think the suspension is too hard and harsh.
    ebay is good for consumables.
The standard silencer is heavy and chokes the motor, i got a used one from ebay then gutted and shortened it.

Then power up mod CLICK FOR LINK
An aftermarket chain guide is a worthwhile buy aswell , this is what i got CLICK FOR LINK

My 06 610s clutch makes it a little hard to find neutral.

You have to keep the cable adjusted with just a little free play at the lever.

BTW that is not the stock plastic on that bike...stock is dark gray.

Sorry guys just started a new job Monday and have been busy! I am from Akron OH. I did some ordering online for consumables. I figured parts and stuff would be harder to find but there seems to be plenty of vendors..knock on wood. It was also painted she will return to her original black or dark grey..?..sometime soon.

I just got her down into my bedroom in the basement which will be my workshop for the winter (my garage is not heated) I will scour the forums a bit more even though I find it hard to navigate with the search bar? Ill be going over her with a comb... I already have the tank off and will be draining the oil and repairing LH side cover puncture that was JB welded by the previous owner that is weeping ever so slightly. Anything else I need to take a look at? From my understanding cam chain should be fine with less than 1500 miles on her?

Eventually I will be doing something with the exhaust and power mods but until I can get some good riding time this spring shes got plenty of bite..Ill keep those in mind though.

I also ordered an AFX FX41 helmet and may get a nicer icon variant in the future. Any suggestions on gloves or other gear that is relatively sumo style?

And if anybody wants to chime in on insurance i got quoted on my moms policy (multi vehicle and other discounts) 1100 yr for full coverage and about 700 for liability. Im 19...1 speeding ticket. Its through an agent who has us going through progressive...I heard state farm is fairly MC friendly. Just wondering if thats a lot or I should suck it up..seems just a little high.

Enough blabbering here she is all nakey. Dont tell my girlfriend that I sometimes sneak her into bed at night :awww:

On the suspension, the SM suspension is much stiffer than the longer suspended TE.

You will probably note the font forks have little if any static sag.

The first thing I did to mine was have the front fork damper rods replaced with Dirt spec damper rods to lengthen the forks then took a lot of preload out of the springs. You could most likely just take some preload off the springs to get some sag and lower the sag on the back spring as well.

I wanted mine a little stiffer. (since there is no compression valve adjuster ) I just run some heavier oil. 7.5 i think.
and run the rebound ( adjuster on top ) all the way in. Does good on the track days that way. 190 weight with gear.

Ill do the same with my rebound and that should be perfect. Anyone have an info on taking peg brackets off? Looks like a thin walled 10mm socket..too tight for anything else
