    Hello all - Newbie here!

I'm about 60% though restoring my first husky, I think (still to confirm) is a 1974/5 460CR.

This is the first bike I have restored, trying to ensure that everything is spot on so it can enjoy another 40 years :) given this is my first effort if there any any folks out there willing to give advice I'd be truly grateful.

I'll try and add my Blog details in a bit but for now here is a couple of pictures.

    Many thanks

We'll, Husky never made a 460. This looks like a 1976 360 based of the cylinder fin count and laid Dow rear shocks but with an older air cleaner box. You can positively ID what you have based on frame and engine serial numbers. Husky-parts.com has all the info you need. Good luck with your build!

This is a 75 360, its not like that motor. Must be older i would say.

It looks like a 400 engine, but newer frame, it does not look like a modified older frame?

Thanks - I don't think the frame has been change in any way - here is a closer look after paint, the second image has the rear dry fitted :-)

    Many thanks :-) I'm not sure, the Haynes manual say there is a 460 (454cc) 1973 - 1974 - I've also got somewhere a old sales flyer with a 460 amendment noted. Husky Parts show a 1975 model with a 460?

Can we post frame and engine numbers on here? The engine number is 2046**** and the frame has MK155** stamped on it - does that sound right?

Feel rather like Sherlock Home trying to track down the bikes past! Fun tho :-)

...I've popped up a couple of picture of the engine, I took the opportunity to measure the piston while the head was off being power coated - rather hope that helps give some hints??

Can you tell I'm new to engines / restores?! !

    Thank you

That is likely a 1975 400 or 460 with customer modification to the original frame as that is not an ML frame but a modified MK frame that was standard on the non GP models

Crumbs - thanks, but what does that mean - sorry for being dull, Huskies are new to me! What did they modify, the frame to fit the 460 into it ? Whats the main difference between an ML and MK frame?

    thanks

It looks like a 75,6 frame with an older motor. The best way to find out is to search the frame and engine numbers. I use vintagehusky.com to id my bikes. I'm sure there are others and probably on this site too.

thanks disonny - I'm being really thick here - sorry! Engine number is 204600** & the frame is MK155** do I check for the first three digits and assume the numbers are sequential?

I'd like to have the bike registered for daytime use so want to make sure I perfectly understand what I'm looking at!

The MK was the predecessor to the ML /GP frame. The 450/460, the 400 5 speed, and the 250CR/WR all used the MK frame. The MK frame was the last low travel rear suspension prior to the ML frame introduced on the GP models. Your MK frame was modified to resemble the ML frame. It was a common modification to try to make those bikes competitive with the ML framed 250CR and 360CR. The 74 400CR that was posted above is a restored MK frame in all it's natural beauty . In all fairness, the frame alteration was good enough to cause some to feel it was a later frame. But since I own several ML frames, I was able to spot the MK under all the modifications.

    By the numbers it should be a 75 frame. Are you sure the motor is 2046? 2048 would make it a 1975 400cc. I didn't see a 2046. A 460 would be a 2034.

Bryan Wade rode a 460 Husqvarna at the 1973 Ken Hall, complete with yellow tank...not sure of exact cc but thats what every one called it and was on the sticker on the clutch case ...the other 3 doing well that day were bob wright on a ccm, dave bickers on a cz and vic eastwood on maico .

You will likely need to remove the cylinder head and measure the bore to settle the displacement issue. With a Husqvarna that old it has been rebuilt and repaired several times. Because of a lot of interchangable parts on Husqvarnas the engine number may not be a good indicator if the cases were changed out to a set from a different model like a 400 or even a 250 if the older 250 cases happen to have the same reduction web my 82 250s have. The inner web can be removed and allow the use of the big bore cranks. Husqvarna being a small manufacturer at that time did not make specific engine cases for each displacement. The castings from the 5 speed 250 are the same for the larger models with only application specific machining operations applied
