Newbie With Questions Re 1978 250 WR/OR

I recently bought a 1978 250 that was sold as a WR but I'm wondering if it might be an OR. It has an ML frame and a 2066 motor. Although the bike has gold Nordisk wheels (17 rear) instead of Akronts, it was sold with 15" Curnutts (not presently on the bike), which were supposedly the original shocks, and it had a beat-up OR sticker on the transmission cover (I was told, though, that the cover may have been replaced). It has the 691-02 frame with the additional curved tube under the motor and no skid plate.

I have seen some information that suggests the 691-02 frame was unique to the OR, but other sources suggest this was a change for all the 1978 frames - CR and WR too. I asked John at Vintage Husky, who said he thought it was only on the OR but it could have been on the WR as well. Does anyone know for sure?

John also gave me some front fork and swing arm measurements from an OR in his shop and they matched the ones on my bike. Is there any other way to confirm whether this is an OR without opening the case and checking the gearing? Any telltales that I should look for? Here is a picture of the bike passing the remainder of the winter in my garage. Any and all input appreciated. Thanks

The only difference between the normal 1978 ML frame is that the rake on the OR frame is 30.5° and the cradle is more rectangular than the regular 78 ML frame. Curnutts were stock on the OR but they were often installed aftermarket on other Husqvarna models

Well, I measured the rake and wish I had been able to get more consistency in the readings. They were anywhere from 29.5 degrees to 32. I probably didn't have the bike completely vertical and the front wheel facing perfectly straightforward. But it seems it's more than 29 degrees thats for sure. And I checked the stator and its a motoplat, so everything except the wheels points to an OR. Thanks for your input, jimspac and visiteur.

If anyone has the correct wheels for the '78 OR 250, let me know as I may want to swap the Nordisks out for the 18/21 Akronts when I put the Curnutts on.

is the flywheel normal size or huge im sure my 79 WR had a flywheel like a manhole cover be its been 30 years

yes troy, compared to the 80s models the older motoplats had huge flywheels. great for the mud or never stalling..

The OR frame I have has the very rectangular lower cradle and I did see that on another restoration on a 78 250OR a couple years ago. On the brochures that Visiteur posted the brochure shows the OR having a more traditional WR cradle with the center bar. Mine had a center bar that I had removed when I salvaged the bearing cones from the neck for another 78 frame project I have.
