I have searched this forum as well as a couple of others. Does anyone have a good write up for doing this? I know this is a pretty easy task but it scares me to tear into this without having more info. I recently got the X ring from Uptite and want to get this done before I have a problem. TIA
Pretty straight forward. remove the slave cylinder from the bike. DO NOT PULL IN THE CLUTCH WHEN THE SLAVE IS OFF THE BIKE!!! IT WILL BREAK THE SLAVE CYLINDER AND YOU WILL BE INSTANTLY PISSED! With the slave off, take out the retaining ring. carefully pry the piston out. I use my fingernails under the center post that has the ball in it. Set the slave down with the open pocket facing up so all your oil doesnt run out. With the piston out, remove the old ring, install the new making sure it is not twisted. lube the ring up with some mineral oil. I use singer sewing machine oil for the clutch, its like 2 dollars at walmart and is a little lighter than the magura blood. Now fill the pocket in the slave with mineral oil and reinstall the piston. Push the piston down to reinstall the retaining ring. Put the slave back on the bike and bleed.
Do I need to ake the hyd line off the slave? Sorry for the dumb questions. Maybe I can find a picture of the insides somewhere so I can better visualize what you are describing. Thanks Colomoto....I will see if there is a picture anywhere to help with the O ring installation.
You don't need to take the hyd line off the slave to change the oring. Once you get the slave off the bike it will be pretty clear what you need to do. There are only a few parts and it really is very straight forward.
Concerning the mineral oil ..... so the thinner "Singer" oil is a good substitute? How about simple hydraulic oil ...like what goes in your floor jack? I've got that in the garage now. Is it too thick? Surely it's been tried. Thanks, dave
Never heard of floor jack oil being used. I did some research into the singer oil a while back. It's basically highly refined mineral oil. Couple other guys had tried it and nothing blew up, so i thought I would give it a go. It seems a little thinner/waterier than the magura stuff, and was only 2-3 dollars a bottle. Ran it since late July with no problems.
Any idea on a part number or alternate places to get the x ring in Australia? Ordering a single ring from OS is gonna be a pain. Any thoughts on whether they will last as long as oring or not?
Any good auto or ag parts store should have a good selection of o and x rings. If not try online stores. Be very picky on the fit though.
I finally got around to replacing it, local bike shops couldnt source one, nor most parts or bearings places. Ended up at a place that repairs air tools (nail guns etc) he found me one is 3 sec and gave it to me for free. (i left some cash anyway). Installed, gravity bled and all sorted in a few minutes. BTW the air tool repairer was Bernie Adams, says he was heavily involved in Husky MX back in the day...anyone heard of him?
