I apologise if this has been asked/done already. ..has anyone opened the OE mufflers to see the layout inside?
Yes. Try some searching, there's definitely threads about it. Try advrider also. Basically, cat in front 1/3rd, nothing exciting in the rest, except for spark arrestor in the tail (unless it's a strada).
Anyone got tips on how to extract the spark arrestors on a Terra that has done 13500 km and they are well stuck in there from day one. Circlips are out and mufflers off with penetrating oil in the spark arrestor area but nothing works.
So my spark arrestors came out fairly easily on my 1350 km TR650. The tweeter stopped squeaking but lots of fine packing material came flying out. 2 Questions... How do i stop tweety from chirping? How can i keep the spark arrestors from seizing in without removing them completely?
Im not really interested in spending money on an aftermarket muffler. I like the sound of the stock pipes. Would something like this work? Linky
"How do i stop tweety from chirping?" I bought mine used and the spark arrestors had been removed. The PO had been a poster on here before trading it in and I contacted him. Fortunately he still had them and sent them to me but said, "You'll hate them because it'll chirp with them in." It did. I cannot for the life of me remember where I'd read it, but someone somewhere posted something about using bicycle head spacers to fill the little cut-outs at the end of the arrestors that appeared to be the source of the tweet. It worked. I posted a more detailed description of the fix, so let me search back through this forum and Adv to find it and I'll cut and paste here.
Well that didn't take long. From my post on Adv, describing Dangslow's fix in this forum: The problem and one fix was described by Dangslow on huskycafe. Problem was exhaust flow over/through the two holes in the inner ring of the arrestor that you use to remove them. He used a 1" steel split spacer capped with 1 1/8" aluminum bicycle steering head spacers. I didn't have and couldn't locate the steel split spacer he used but did manage to find out from a co-worker who bikes what the hell a steering head spacer was. He happened to have a pack of 1" x 5mm black aluminum ones that he gave me to try. They fit perfectly over the inner ring, pretty much a press fit. I tapped them in with a punch. Two of the 5mm rings covered the holes and left just enough of the inner ring to stake them lightly in place with a chisel. Absolutely unobtrusive, aren't coming out - and no chirp! And arrestor-extraction holes can still be used. I installed the arrestors with a skim of anti-seize around the area where they mate with the muffler and had no problem popping them back out using two metal picks. Turns out they make the 1" steering head spacers in various lengths (5, 10, & 20mm), in several colors, and even carbon fiber. Who knew?! A single 10mm on each side would be perfect. A 5-pack of the aluminum ones is $10.56 on amazon, and no doubt available at a bike shop. So if your TR chirps and you're not fond of it, a cheap and easy solution is available. So there you have it. Apparently, like much else with these bikes, some people have one issue or the other, others don't. At any rate, thanks, Dangslow, if you've still got the Terra.
And having just re-read that, it suggests a solution to trying to remove arrestors that have been in place too long. A vice grip slide hammer (or two) working with 2 substantial 90 degree bend picks might work them loose, especially with a bit of heat. I've seen the grip slide hammer set up but can't recall if it was a purchased or crafted item. Consult google. Edit: Jeez, google has LOTS of choices! Let us know if it works.
Dan at Motoxotica had shown me a trick with using a bb. You drill a small indentation inside where the spark arrestor touches the silencer. Drill a little at a time until the bb sits inside the hole just enough that it will wedge up against the spark arrestor and not allow it to vibrate.
"wedge up against the spark arrestor and not allow it to vibrate." Good advice, although I'm not sure the TR650 chirp is vibration. It really is an odd sound that occurred with deceleration and presumably a lot of back pressure in the exhaust. I can't say for certain that it wasn't vibration because the head spacer fix did snug things up too. The other thing that's an unknown - at least on mine - is the effect of the catalytic converts on exhaust flow and chirp issue. Hard for me to say because I dealt with the chirp shortly after getting the bike and the catalytic converts were intact. Then somehow while inspecting the interior of the pipes I notice large honey comb-like things in them and figured it had to be some sort of beehive or maybe dirt daubers (crafty buggers) so of course I removed the offending blockage. Chirp still gone but no way to tell if simply removing the cats would have made it disappear withouut any other effort.
My 510 had made that weird chirp with the factory pipe that had the cat. Still made it with the arrow with the power up kit. It's just some weird husky thing I guess. I've never heard another brand do it, just the husky's.
I never posted any because I suck trying to do phone pics. If someone really wants to see what I did I guess I can pull it apart and show pics of parts and installation. Might take me a bit to get around to it, and the pictures will still suck, but I'll do it if necessary.
Hey Scott thanks, by pull apart if its an easy unbolt then cool, but if its a cut job don't worry, something will turn or I'll just cut mine open anyway
I used a seal removal tool on mine, which I bought cheap at a local auto parts stores. It's got a couple of 'hooks' to either side, and you can rotate around the baffle and break it free a bit at a time. One muffler was easier than the other, on my Terra
