    Hi all,

I recently picked up a 2008 SM 610 from a local shop who didn't seem to have the maintenance records. After riding it home and around the neighborhood I decided it would be a good idea to do a quick oil change before I put more miles on it. Today I picked up 2L of torco semi-synth 10w-40 (as recommended by the local husky shop) and got to work.

I warmed the motor and shut it off. I then unscrewed the oil filler cap and removed the 12mm bolt and let the oil drain. A minute or two later I got a long enough extension for the 10mm allen bolt, popped that one off too and let the rest drain while I cleaned the shavings off the magnet. I put both bolts back in and then measured out a little bit less than 1.37 quarts (as per the owners manual) and poured it in. Screwed the cap back in and fired it up. Everything seemed normal except after I shut it down and let the oil cool/drain for a few minutes I noticed the capacity window was completely full.. I loosened the 12mm bolt and drained out a little bit. Leveled the bike again and still full! I did this 2-3 more times and I couldn't seem to make any difference!

I fired the motor up again to mix the oil a bit, drained a bit more and finally seemed to get the oil level between the two lines on the sight. I probably drained at least an extra 500ml! Why would there be such a discrepancy in oil drained vs replaced? I didn't replace the oil filter as I needed to order one so that'll take a week or two. I also didn't pull the 'bag' filter but I can't imagine that would make up such a large difference in oil drained. Any ideas what might have gone wrong? Anyone else experience anything similar?

On my 630, it's kind of the same deal. After a complete drain, by pulling both plugs, the oil filter, and the screen, filling it with the recommended amount of oil tops it off FULL. My sportbikes were the same way. I think the oil fill amount assumes the engine is bone dry, and is intended to put you right at the full mark.

You would need to pull both screens to get close to the recomended fill amount.

    oil level

First we always run the level just at the top line,we also know alot of oil gets trapped in the left cover,if you tip the bike right to left a few times each time alot more oil comes out from the left cover. It normaly takes about 1.7 with oil change and filter cleanings and changeing, its a reusable gasket you can loosen the alt cover bolts 1/8 inch tap the cae open 1/8 in and drain better.sorry if didnt get chance to explain all this in detail.billf

After pulling the drain plugs and the 2 filter screens from the rh side, let it drain for a few min then lean bike to the right for a min or so then lean it back to the lh side more oil will come out. It will take a full 2 1/2 qts then this mtr is capable of being a little over filled with no issues. Later George
