I've had my bike up and running for two weeks now and a good handle on what's changed so I figured I'd fill in on the experience of getting this done. For those who don't know, I don't think Canadians even had an opportunity to MOSS their bikes before the KTM switchover. Once BMW was out we were truly on our own. Here in Vancouver there's a reasonable dealer network for both BMW and KTM but no one was willing to do anything with ECU. I put up a stink on KTM's FB page and, surprisingly, they replied. Was excited with KTM Canada phoned me and said they'd update the map for free! IT was, however, pretty much downhill from there. Rather than rambling a long, disappointing storey, here's the Cole's Notes: -Originally told they'd ship a tool out, of course didn't happen. -Changed to me shipping dash, ECU, ignition barrel and key to KTM Canada. -Informed it would take two weeks, at most, rush-shipping to KTM California to be mapped and shipped back. -It took five weeks altogether, with pretty much all the action happening in the last week as I was frustrated enough to randomly dial through to whoever I could in the KTM California phone directory. -Turns out my equipment was gathering dust for a few weeks as it arrived in California without instructions or follow-up. -Fake excuses, diversions an ignored calls from KTM Canada -FINALLY get equipment back, bike up and running. Attached is the paperwork KTM sent back with the ECU and all. I asked for a summary of work done, which I suppose I received, but perhaps a more knowledgeable member can decipher what's in the paperwork. I also asked to have the dash spanner reset but they, of course, didn't do that. Started the bike up after doing a full TPS reset and the 10 min, fan-on idle. Not impressed, really. I wouldn't say it's any worse or better, just a little different. The bike now takes 2-3 more cranks to get started from cold and, when it starts, it usually jumps to ~2,5000 RPM for brief moment then settles down. The stumble is still there but it seems like it's just a little higher up the RPM band. Once moving it feels like the same bike as I originally had. The off-idle is still tricky but just in a slightly different manner. I put on a few hundred kms on the stock setup but got fed up and plugged the EJK back in. With the EJK on I have my bike feeling exactly like it used to before I shipped the ECU off but it still has to few extra cranks and higher initial revs from a cold start. I lost five weeks of summer riding for a handful of frustration and a few extra cranks on startup. I believe my bike was OK for the stumble (compared to stories I've read on here) and the ECU came back still OK with a slightly different personality. The OSS could be worth considering if you could drive-in and have it done in a day. I would not recommend to anyone to ship their ECU around for it, though. Even if KTM was on the ball (which they absolutely are not and any measure) the downtime isn't worth it. But I finally have my bike back and, all things considered, it's running pretty well.
Nick, I feel your pain. Bought my Terra in June , experienced the stumble on the second ride. Bought the "Booster Plug" for almost $200.00 Canadian, moved the stumble from 3100 RPM to 3300 RPM. Only way I know it has done anything is my "snowflake" constantly flashes. Tried contacting my selling dealer...no response. Unfortunately a great bike with a serious hiccup.
The paperwork on page 2 indicates they used the latest BMW programming system (ISTA/P 3.56) to do the update and it was updated from the 2nd release of firmware (8532185) in the BMS-C to the latest firmware (8543016). The Dash (Kombi) was checked and no firmware update was needed as there has only been the one firmware release on that I am suspicious of the fact it only shows an Idle Actuator reset and not a full BMS-E reset but that may just be the way the operations report writes it Also interesting the Dealer Info is not present in the header of the report, normally a name and number there When you say a full TPS reset was done after you reassembled the bike, what method did you use ?, the process described here on Cafe Husky does nothing and no disrespect to KiwApe is intended in saying that, he will understand me. I would suggest you talk to the BMW car dealers round your area as those with access to the bike programming can also do the Husky if you get them on side The KiwiApe change to the Pulstar plug would be your best course of action from here
There is a problem with sending an ecu in for a tuneup, as in the only can give you standard settings. A TPS reset or calibration is worthless unless it is on the bike. Also, there is no way for them to set or adjust your throttle butterfly then calibrate that change, when they do not have the bike. I have been informed today that the BMW dealers can do the update and work on your bike, but have to get authorization from Husqvarna to hook up to the BMW system and access the Husqvarna vin authorizations needed. Since BMW and Husky are not companies in the USA or Canada, I would venture to guess this would apply to the Canada BMW dealerships the same as USA dealers. It seems to be an unknown authorization process that many dealers will not find worth the trouble to even research. Both the Husky and BMW dealers have to cooperate with each other.
Update from Calgary...Blackfoot Motorsports took my Terra in today to see if there was anything they could do. They do have a MOSS system there and were able to communicate and download 8543016 (had 8532185). Only drove 2 km's so far...will post more after some more km's.
Being as I'm in Calgary as well, was it worth it? My terra runs well but I'll always go for any improvements.
Yes, well worth it...pulls first gear power wheelie now, could not do that even with Booster Plug on. I removed the booster plug to get the software update done and see no reason to re-install it. Jeff (Shop Foreman) at Blackfoot is the guy to see.
Please let me know how that turns out for you. Now I have to wait for foul weather before I take my baby in to them. I want to ride as long as I can before we get the white stuff.
I was able to get the $150.00 credited back to Blackfoot where I used it to trade in the Terra for a DRZ400S. Somehow the Terra sprouted oil and coolant leaks in its first 1953 km's and I could no longer bear to look at the Terra...they made it go away.
I see the bike is up on Blackfoot's website used for $6899.00. That is more than it was new http://www.blackfootpreowned.com/show.php?id=2729&p=50&page=1&srt=make ASC. Was told official fix would be available in a couple months.
It should be pointed out to the Authorities, in writing, that the primary problem can be fixed for owners by having the bikes re programmed to the latest firmware which has been available for a long time as many machines were not properly pre delivered. Machines on the 8543015 / 8543016 firmware run well There is still a need for Husky/Distributors/BMW to ensure the Terra firmware is not affected by the problem identified on the BMW G650GS model. That is a different problem and when it occurs it requires turning ignition off and back on again
Nice, I definitely did not receive anywhere close to that for a trade in value. In fact it was devalued an extra $500.00 over original trade in price as leaking radiator may/or may not be under warranty.
