Broke my leg today. Clean break just above the ankle, the small bone. Dumped the Terra on sand, dang I hate sand. Just got back from the VA getting a splint. What a perfect day for riding though. When I picked the bike back up, it would not start, starter button issue. I kept monkeying with it, and if caught. Drove home out of the back country and tarmac, about 40 miles with a broken leg. Lesson, ride with somebody.
Thanks for all the kind thoughts, I appreciate them. It really isn't all that bad, at least not what I thought a broken leg would feel like I picked the bike back up and rode it home, and was actually smiling and enjoying the ride, must have been the extra endorphin. I was able to get ice on it waiting for my ride to ER, so the swelling wasn't too bad. Sleeping tonight is the challenge.
Too bad and heal up well ...Maybe recovery time will not be too long ... I fell over just the other day and my foot got pinned under the bike but the boots saved me again ..zero injury ...
I had these boots on, and the break is right about wher the top buckle is. I wonder if it contributed. I have my other street boots, which are just all leather with good padding, not sure if it would have made a difference, maybe a broken ankle joint, as these are pretty tough, and the ankle on the inside is bruised pretty good. But, I have had the other boots over 30 years and no injuries, so I will most likely go back to them. One thing for sure, if I do get the full length boot, I know more what to look for. My leathers are Hein Gericke, and I do have the pants that zip up, again about 30 years old, no injuries. No kevlar but good padding. Don't wear the pants for dirt.
Having just come off a severely broken ankle i too know what to look for now, I broke my ankle inside of sidi crossfires srs and i will tell anyone who will listen they are built with a glaring issue. The hinge system they use is great for forward\backwards support and movement. The problem is just below this reinfoced hinge area is the weak spot. If you apply lateral pressure and push with your thumb just below the hinge it will collapse and buckle. Thats how my ankle broke the boot gave sideways, my ankle dislocated broke multiple bones tore multiple tendons made a mess of it, I did a ton more research and studying how they were built and decided on alpinestars tech 10s. I will never buy a pair of bootd with a hinge systen that doesnt tie in to the heel\sole area.
Gaernes are the boots for me! I rode with cheap boots when I first started riding dirt in 2004. My Yamaha WR250 came down on the top of my foot with the barkbuster in a low speed wreck and cracked a bone on the top of my foot.
I, too, crashed my TR last weekend. Low speed, low-side. 6 broken ribs! Must be getting old! I rode the bike home - no damage other than bent shifter! Heal quickly!
Thanks, you too, heard any good jokes lately? I forgot about broken ribs, I don't even remember how I did that, a couple time, but not on the bike.
My wife was wearing full length boots when she broke her leg. Yep, right at the top buckle. My thought is that if you break your leg while wearing good boots, you were gonna break it no matter what. The injury is probably less than if you weren't wearing good boots. Heal quick and ride.
Kinda like when I broke my ribs in August. I wasn't wearing any armor, but it wouldn't have mattered. I broke my ribs because of the impact to my shoulder. My shoulder stopped when it hit the ground, but the rest of me kept going. My ribcage just compressed underneath, and went to hell.
Hang in there and heal fast. I fractured my leg in two places in basic training at Fort Ord CA. I couldn't get in to see a doctor but was supplied with darvon and continued to run (hobble) the 5 miles to the rifle range with full gear for several days until I raised enough stink to get to go to the hospital for Xrays.
I do want to thank everybody for stopping in, it helps alot. At one point I ran the idea of selling the bike, and quickly dismissed it. Trust me when I say, I know heartache when it comes to bikes. I just received a call from the Orthopedic dept, and have an appointment for tomorrow morning to get the full skinny.
Having been there too many times (41 bones total) I wish you a speedy and painfree recovery. Don't do too much too soon. On more than one occasion I went back to my craziness (like wheelying my Z1 900 with a full leg cast on) before I should have and paid the price with a longer recovery. Glad to see you quickly came to your senses and didn't sell the bike. I did that and regretted it ever since (try finding a Z1R-TC for less than 25k these days).
