• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Steve,
I've got a extra pair of ITC Ohlins , i think there 18" though.

Husky John

Yes 18.5 i bet, too long :( thanks though John!

I know another member cut and re-welded the lower shock mount on ITC's to make them suitable for 81-82. I also recall seeing a post where someone said you could purchase new shorter lower mounts to adapt the ITC's to 81-82 years. You may be able to get them direct from Ohlins. Not sure about the difference in the internals, but the single progressive spring is much better than the dual spring design.

It is my impression that long section the hemi joint is in is necessary if the shock mounts to the center of the swingarm as opposed to in a pocket on top of it.

A problem with posts of this nature is they want new or good condition and if someone has a pile of shocks they got in parts bikes and have never had rebuilt what would you suggest they do. Ignore the request I would imagine.

The WER suspention site sponsor Drew I believe is his name could likely get new ones or rebuild/modify existing ones. The wr ones might just have a travel reducing part inside.

They are pretty easy to bend the rod just fall over and have the impact spot be that spring collar.

Well my friend hopes to find new ones at what ever price, thought i would post here to see where others have got new ones.

No worries fran...k. used was a plan b option..............

I have bought a lot of parts from there, no 17.5 piggyback shocks listed and also sent him an email.

Thanks though......

You can un-screw the long bottom eye and screw on some shorter ones if you want to use a pair of ITC Ohlins....

Warm up the thread with a blowtorch to break down the Loctite on the threads though and clamp the shafts with nothing harder than Aluminium to do this.

Spoke to Drew, he has all the parts to make them like new but no cores.
Got Rick Horvat's number from Husqvarna-parts and he had a rebuilt pair all ready to ship.

My buddy decided to go with Rick.

Thanks all :)

I think Fran has it right. The ITC shocks used on models with the center bolt swing arm need the very long eye to clear the swing arm as shocks are compressed. We can shorten the ITC's by adding a spacer inside with no problem, it would require disasembly.

Guys, be careful. Sometimes you wind up with shocks that are the correct overall length but shafts and bodies are incorrect. You know i'm sure, that if the original shaft and body length aren't maintainted your going to wind up with too little or too much travel. I just built a set of piggy back Ohlins for my 79 250 and the bodies and shafts had to be shortend. Just don't want anyone to go over the bars if it can be helped.

Well the shocks came in from Rick H, My bud is happy with them.

He has a 79 390 CR with an 81 swing arm and 84 XC forks,
Built it for some vintage MX and has a big red MS tank for some bush rides.

'81-'82 shocks bolt to side of swingarm, except 420 Auto which uses older style swing arm.
