With the way things are progressing with Logan and his riding at age 6 , and his incessant demands for a two stroke for his 7th Birthday ( next April) I picked up a used 2000 KX 65 in good running condition for $500 with current California registration through June of 2011.

Needs new tires, grips but other than that a good sound bike from a family I know that rode it in the high desert about four or five times a year.. It has been sitting, unused, in their garage for the last three years

Here is the question: any of you have experience with KX 65's ?

Any normal things to look for, points of wear, performance upgrades or improvements?

I have plenty of time to go through it as he is not ready for it yet.

    Thoughts?

My son just moved up to an 85, he went from a Yamaha TTR50 to a KX65, it way surprise him at first but it never takes a kid long to learn to keep it on the pipe, I would just freshen up the motor with new piston/rings get him some new tires and run through everything, they were the same bike for a good number of years so pipes, reeds etc are easy to find (even good used pipes) I'd pick up a good pipe and maybe some reeds and as he gets used to the thing let him "help you" add the upgrades, thats what I did with my son and it helpd him gain an interest in maintaining his own bike very young, in stead of the "get on and ride it till it quits running" attitude he had with the 50. He's 11 now and has worked his way through the 50, a 65, a KLX140 and finally an 85... hes ready for a 125 now but hes still a few inches two short, but he has run my RM250 around the backyard track with the help of blocks and a predetermined "Stop Point" for me to catch him :D

Like I said they learn "FAST" very quickly

Working on Dad of the year for 2011 also?

Dunno about the 65 but I have a KX100 for some reason I have put more miles on it that anyone :D Buddy has a house / land with trails that we cut in and are TIGHT! The KX100 is faster through those trails than a TE250 and TXC510 :p I proved that last time we were out there.

    :excuseme: :D:D:D

If that is the case , then I'm going to post of something soon that should get me Dad of the decade then... :D:D:D:excuseme: !!!Logan's MX theme room is almost complete. I just need a used pit board for a final touch! Anyone got one?

So far the people I have met at the track all say they are pretty much bullet proof.

I have to admit, transitioning him from a CRf 50 seem a little ( make that a lot) of a leap....
