Please list common mods for TE449/511

I've been reading lots of threads trying to educate myself regarding my upcoming purchase of a new big bore TE and I keep seeing various mods referenced. If this has been covered in one thread before please point me in the right direction but if not please list the more common mods with info such as performance enhancement, weight reduction, cost, and whether or not it could possibly make the bike fail inspection for street use. Obviously inspections vary widely from state to state so theres no way to know for sure but I think you get the idea.

While modifications may be desirable for some they are not necessary. After a break-in of about 500 miles the bike settles down and runs fine in stock form.

I agree, most of the mods are not necessary. IMHO the vent mod and catch tank is a good idea on even a stock bike. There is a huge difference between 800cc of oil and 1200, smoother shifting, cooler running and a little quieter. The main purpose of the Zipty engine vent re-locator is actually to save your torque limiter, but the engine oil increase is very desirable.

Nice video! I will try to offer advice in the order of items listed in your video...

I'd ditch those plastic guards, one good tree and you're going to get hurt. Cycra guards work great and they are pretty light, Highwaydirtbike guards are nice too (See Kelly - Motosportz bike). Highwaydirtbikes Anti-vibration inserts.

I have double take mirrors, ask away, and flip out mirrors not legal in CA.
GPS mount needs to be a ram and ball mount.

We sell a front tire that is DOT legal, lasts a long time and is good on everything from sand/mud to hard slippery rock GT 216AA Fat Tire.

Stock exhaust is made by Farconni (not LeoVince), it's a good pipe but it is very restrictive and weights 12lbs!! Decat it if you are going to keep it. Remove O2 sensor, replace with 12 x 1.5 oil drain plug and ziplock baggy your sensor to save it.

Stock battery is 6lbs and will eventually fail on you in the form of poor hot starts, Earthx 1.3lbs, double the amp hour and works well in cold. Battery tender works with Earthx, not with others.

We (ZipTyRacing) have an aluminum gas cap coming which we made with an updated sealing feature, better than Husky hard parts, coming soon. Stock plastic cap will eventually fail again.

Decat + Map#3 will open your bike up to 82mph even with 14 tooth front sprocket. Fuel map switch is good. Map 3 will make your map 2 feel like a gutless wonder(and eliminate death from flame out accidents).

2.4 gallons is the stock tank, also see Nomad tank from Motosportz or IMS 3 gallon from Bill's add-on for the front.

Change rear turn signals to flush mount to the rear fender, stock ones are a headache when popped out.

Factory seat is a vinyl covered 2x4. SeatConcepts replacement seat is very nice.
Stock skid plate rocks, a lot better than you might think. Removed my aluminum skid plate, put stock back on.

7602 Radiator Guards. XF Racing coolant

Change your oil every 30, 100 and 300 miles initially on break in and then every 300 miles, Mobil1 0W40 Euro Formula. Highly recommend Stainless Steel oil filter.

Oil reservoir tank and breather recommended to allow the full 1150cc oil to be added.

ZipTyRacing Suspension services package will make your 449 feel lighter and fatigue you less.

Nice video, I really enjoyed it. I have a 2013 TE511. I just purchased the bike in November. I have done a few mods you might be interested in.

1. I have the Double Take mirror. I like it. It is easy to raise or lower as needed. Very heavy duty. Rear vision is good up to about 55 on the road then the vibes cause the mirror to blur.


2. I got the Cycra Pro Bend handguards. IMHO they are much stronger than what you have. They installed easily and clear all controls/cables.




3. I have a Garmin Montana GPS that I mount in a Garmin rugged mount. Again, very heavy duty. I have mine hard wired to the battery. I have not had any problems with the GPS coming loose in any riding conditions. It uses the Ram mounting system.




4. Your rear signals make me nervous. I broke one the just trying to park in my driveway. I got the Extreme Dual Sport signals and mounted them in the stock location. These things are the real deal and are very tough. I cut down my rear fender but still retain the stock plate light. So far that has worked out good.

The next mods for sure will be new guards, radiator guards, stainess filter, and possibly mag drain plug.....kinda short on cash right now.

I'll look into Cycra guards, GPS ram and ball mount, GT 216AA Fat Tire, ZipTy gas cap, and 7602 Radiator Guards for the next upgrades. Im extremely short on money (part time & contract work when available) but will try to scrape some money together for next summer (snow on ground right now)

The mods after that might be suspension, oil sump mod, and possibly a seat per your comment (i'm not too disappointed with the 2x4...but something with a bit of comfort wouldn't be bad either)

You guys are in CA correct? Perhaps I should drop it off and have you do your magic next time I drive down the 395.

Where can one find a Stainless Steel oil filter for a TE449??? Been looking like crazy for it but nowhere to be found.
