I didn't pay attention to the orientation of the left side bag filter when I removed it. However, the more logical orientation looks the complete reverse of the what's shown on the parts fiche. The diagram shows a flat outside cover plate but my 2009 cover plate looks different. It has a protrusion on the inside of the cover plate. The inner bag filter fits perfectly over this protrusion with the gasket side (the flared side) facing outward, making a nice seal. If I reverse the inner bag filter as shown on the diagram, it's metal on metal. Could they have changed this on the '09? My '08 should be the same as yours. The inner filter sleeve does appear reversed in the document. The narrow end goes into the engine first, and should fit nicely into its socket there, leaving the flared end at the outside.
Just did mine before I went down to Death Valley last week. It IS the reverse of what is shown on the parts fiche. Any other questions feel free to ask.
I tried and it only fits one way. I took mine out the first time and didn't think I needed to check it that close, but I was wrong.
