With the great help of PaulC and Wayne C and this post http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/safety-recall-husqvarna-tr650-terra-strada-models.82027/ I have been dealing with DOTARS (Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development) in trying to get the Australian TR's recalled. DOTARS have manged to get PaulC's bike updated to the latest firmware but did not issue a recall as they had at the time only received 2 reports/complaints from Australian customers. The current state of play is DOTARS want to push for a recall with the assistance of the ACCC, however they do not have enough reports/complaints to build a case. If YOU live in Australia and want a recall to occur for Australian owners please go to this page: https://ncsf.infrastructure.gov.au/DepartmentofInfrastructure/ If you encounter any problems loading the form I have added some additional information/links further down this first page after glitch_oz post. The form is quite simple to fill in: Reported by: That is your personal details Report Type: Category - Safety issues Subcategory - Occupant protection Vehicle details: That's your bike details - approval number - have a look at his page https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/reporting/faqs.aspx to find the approval number on your bike. Report details: Something along the lines of - Random stalling that has the potential to cause an accident or hazard. This is a worldwide known software issue with the BMS-E engine management ECU. The Husqvarna TR650 is a BMW built motorcycle with a BMS-E ECU, this ECU has software issues and a new update is available (8543015) through BMW. BMW have the equipment and trained personnel to perform the update but will not update the software as the vehicle was imported by the Paul Feeney Group. The Husqvarna dealerships are unable to update the ECU as rights to the software have been removed and the Husqvarna dealerships no longer have the equipment or training to perform the update. BMW have issued a safety recall in Australia for the G650GS for random stalling, this bike has the same BMS-E ECU. Canada and America have issued a recall for the Husqvarna TR650 motorcycle. Have you reported this matter to the manufacturer, dealer or supplier?: Yes What was the outcome?: Your story or something like this - The Husqvarna dealerships are unable to update the ECU as they no longer have access to the required equipment or software. The BMW dealerships are unable to provide the update but do not want to take on the liability. Paul Feeney Group have not provided any resolution to the issue. Can the information be disclosed to other parties? Yes END of Form Just press submit. Please consider taking 15 minutes to fill in the form and try to get a fix for the bike before someone gets squashed. Thank you in advance - Happy to help if further guidance is required or if I need realigning!
thanks for that! I'll file the complaint tonight. I gave up after getting the thumbs down from the Husqvarna, BMW and KTM dealers here in Perth and bought a Wuka and Pulstars (which so far fixed the occasional cold start stall) but certainly would prefer to have this sorted properly.
I know for a fact that my Terra has the latest firmware (as delivered from dealer) and apart from some minor running-in stumbling the bike is now fantastic. I'm sure the Pulstar plugs helped that. So, with regard to the recall, I'm not sure I should lodge as I have no complaint. But I do know alot of the TR community have justification. Not sure if I can help...
WayneC told me your bike was running very well with the latest firmware - proof the update can work. For you no complaint submission is required. If you could encourage other owners to lodge the form that would be awesome. Thank you in advance.
Thanks for the heads up...looks like the website form has the same issues as the TR-ECU, though. I'll try again later.
Try this link: https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/reporting/index.aspx Scroll half way down the page to the Submitting a report section and find the grey/blue shaded box - click on the blue text - Submit an Online Vehicle Safety or Non-Compliance Report this should open the form. Alternatively click on this link: https://ncsf.infrastructure.gov.au/DepartmentofInfrastructure/ Also try typing in the text rather than a cut and paste from this forum page. Hope this helps and thanks for the effort
Done. I did some copy and pasting but put my own bits in as well. Random stalling that has the potential to cause an accident, hazard or death. This is a worldwide known software issue with the BMS-E engine management ECU. The Husqvarna TR650 is a BMW built motorcycle with a BMS-E ECU, this ECU has software issues and a new update is available (8543015) through BMW. BMW have the equipment and trained personnel to perform the update but will not update the software as the vehicle was imported by the Paul Feeney Group and now have updated their own systems which no longer supports this motorcycle. The Husqvarna dealerships are unable to update the ECU as rights to the software have been removed and the Husqvarna dealerships no longer have the equipment or training to perform the update. BMW have issued a safety recall in Australia for the G650GS for random stalling, this bike has the same BMS-E ECU, I was told this after the tech's test road my motorcycle and plugged it in to their computers to be told they can no longer do work on the Husqvarna "BMW" motorcycle as their software was updated. Husqvarna and BMW dealerships know about this issue. Canada and America have issued a recall for the Husqvarna TR650 motorcycle. The Husqvarna dealerships are unable to update the ECU as they no longer have access to the required equipment or software. The BMW dealerships are unable to provide the update and also do not want to take on the liability of a Husqvarna branded motorcycle with their running gear. The new owners of Husqvarna motorcycles "KTM" DO NOT WANT any thing to do with the old "BMW" Husqvarna's motorcycles. Paul Feeney Group have not provided any resolution to the issue. The information has been submitted successfully. Number: INC-2016-05-00039
Do it as one day you just mite need to plug your bike in to in the PC for some other reason and can't.. and be in the same situation as the other Terra 650 owners. At some point in the life of our bikes they will need OEM PC support now or 5 years from now and it will be a good feeling knowing that all of Terra 650 owners can do that and just only not rely on 3 party after market stuff that only dose a bit or temp fixes to the bikes. All and All they should make it availble just like cars so any person or work shop can buy a diagnostics tool that can do every thing same as the OEM diagnostics PC's. so it would be up to the owner on how much they want to fix/ spend money on tools to do the job/fix.
I just filed another complaint # 10864373 with the NHTSA in USA as it's been over 60 days since the 1st recall by KTM and nothing has happened. I also called Kevin at KTM, 1-440-985-3553 he stated they are doing everything in their power to resolve this issue. I asked how long before we receive notice to bring the motorcycle to the dealer for repair, unknown now he said but as soon as possible.
It is not all rosy on the car front, the same issues of third party access to programming data for ECU's exists for the cars as it does for the bikes, this is the new battleground for manufacturers where access to diagrams and repair manuals was the battleground of the last century. Independents are locked out of access to Manufacturer diagnostics and programming tools in Oz, there is some access in the US, the EU is the only place addressing the issue properly Your demand that BMW Dealerships be allowed to update the Terra/Strada/Nuda in the DOTARS submission was exactly what is needed, 10 points on that
Thanks, Reporting Number: INC-2016-05-00043 Realised, with so much relying on electronics not being able to fully service the machine, or check the ECU for faults, is a bit of a concern.
Update for all Australian TR650 owners The additional reports/complaint are getting noticed at DOTARS, thank you to those that have actioned this, we are at the tipping point, just need some more owners to submit the report/complaint as per the above process. If you know any other Terra/Strada owners please encourage them to submit a report/complaint - it does not take long and it benefits all of use in the long term. Thanks again
Canada and the United States need to do the same. http://www.safercar.gov/ the more Husqvarna TR650 owners that file a complaint the sooner this stall issue gets resolved, and no one gets squashed. for Canada https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/7/PCDB-BDPP/fc-cp.aspx?lang=eng
The current Oz Husky importer is not quite what has been stated, it is actually AHG in Perth who have separate "business units" for Husky and KTM so there most likely be separate legal entities involved and since they were appointed in November 2013, who would be responsible for any machines sold in 2014 is a good question Here is a simple text list of all 2016 Oz Husky Dealers, there is a line for whether they have programming and diagnostics capability for Terr/Strada/Nuda models Most simply have question marks at the moment but if you all wanted to email each one and ask the question below it would help force DOTARS/ACCC actions "Do you have Programming/Diagnostics capability for the Terra/Strada/Nuda models" Apologies if I have left out any info people have already posted re model support, my time is limited in searching for it
