thinking about a tr650 in california are we going to be able to tweak the fuel injection at all or is it locked?? how much stuff is on the intake and exhaust choking it up?? i know the front fork isn't adjustable but is it at least a cartridge and not a damper fork??
The dealers have to buy an $8000 machine to service the bike but my dealer doesn't have his yet. Maybe another has and can answer the first question. Plenty of power for me! It just needs re-mapping or tweaking for the 2500 rpm range. I wouldn't think that's going to be a problem. As for the rest, it would be nice to be able to adjust the forks but I have not yet heard anything about the internals. I questioned Les at LTR and he doesn't know yet either. I'm sure someone will do something there.
thanx ken i know there was a suspension kit for the dakar that was decent with an ohlins rear and wp forks (would that work on a tr650???) i am currently on a 950 adventure and am looking to downsize a bit my thinking on the tr650 is to treat it like an sv650 and get it for the motor and be able to improve the suspension at a later date is the exhaust overly heavy like a vstrom?? and will we be able to replace it with something lighter??
Grumpyman, you are thinking more or less like me, but I will take a wait-and-see on available mods for the suspension. I do not intend to turn it into a dirt bike, because you just can't. Someone will figure out how to improve the forks and shock, or provide replacements that work better. The exhaust doesn't look overly heavy to me at all. I saved 13 pounds going to a single FMF can on my 630, and you wouldn't save much more on the 650. Thke 950 Adventure is a Big Motorcycle, or at least felt that way when I did a test ride. Extremely capable though! The Terra is not in that league power or suspension wise, but the Terra has plenty of power for the highway, feels much smaller and lighter, and will much simpler to work on.
Hello< I purchased my TR650 Terra about 5 weeks ago, traded my 2011 Truimph 800 Tiger for it. This is certainly the best dual sport bike that I have owned, I also have had 4 KLR650's, still own a 2008 model. Been riding for 50 years, now have 18 bikes. Since new my Husky has had a very lean condition just off idle, very little throttle response. Last week I removed the spark arresters, screens, from the end cap baffles, off idle is much better. I made a tool to attach to a slide hammer to remove the baffles, they are tight. Do not start the bike with the baffles removed, the fiberglass packing in the end of the muffler will end up all over your shop, experience talking here. I also installed a BMW hand guard kit, for the Sertao I believe. Still looking for a skid plate and center stand. I did about 14 hours last weekend in Boone, NC, no pains from the seat. Eric Bostrom did a test of this bike for Cycle World, he stated the only problem was going into a turn over 80 MPH, the bike was very busy. I can verify this as I went into a sweeper at 90 MPH and was quite concerned with the movement of the bike. I will say below 80 MPH the bike handled like a dream. It is hard to believe, but running during breakin I got 75 MPG, running hard in the mountains, pavement and dirt roads, I got 66 MPG.
Leo Vince makes a nice one can exhaust for the G650GS that hopefully will become available for the TR650s. Good for a couple of bhp and it weighs 12 pounds less that the standard 2 can pipe. http://www.sierrabmwonline.com/prod...-exhau-bmw-g650gsf650gsdakar-8572-8573-p-1638 For better fueling the knuckleheads over at Adventure Rider have been having good results from the Booster Plug. http://www.boosterplug.com/shop/bmw-single-cylinder-20c1.html Don't know if they or Power Commander have any plans for a TR650 device. Again, maybe good for a few more bhp, but more importantly, better throttle response. Along with any airbox optimization you might end up with 6-7 more bhp for the whole kit and kaboodle, a nice chunk of weight savings and a snappier throttle. Not bad for around $500.
Just received an email from the makers of the Booster Plug fuel controller. They are working on a prototype for the TR650 and should have the product finished in a couple of weeks.
Our Italian distributor already got a PCV on one of these and was able to develop a map. We need to alter the harness from an existing unit to make it work so we are still a ways out on releasing it. He said getting to the TPS plug was a nightmare!! Stay tuned.
Van can you provide a comparison of the Terra and the Tiger? After selling my 950 Adventure, I've been considering a Tiger XC as a replacement. But, now I'm considering the Terra instead. I'd appreciate any comparisons you can provide.
Leanin: Would offer this about a comparison between the bikes. There 2 things that I don't quite understand Triumph's logic or call it design. Passenger footpeg mounts AND the subframe are both welded to the main frame. In essence, a one piece construction. You toss it, bend a footpeg mount which is easy to do as they arch out really far from subframe, and you have frame damage. You have no way of replacing components but the whole frame. Poor design and I am sure cheaper to manufacture, hence the design. I did not consider the bike for that reason alone.
Dynojet in Vegas will be receiving my new TR soon. They are using my bike to develop a TR specific Powercommander kit! We still have a few weeks before they get my bike, and development May take a few more. I will keep you updated as thing progress.
