When you guys change your oil do you pull the engine case cover to clean the screen? Looks like alot of trouble, my screen on the 510 has min. junk. It is with the effort? Tx Steve
My TE450 has two little screen covers at the bottom of the right side of the motor to access the screens from.
Yup that's all I do. I don't even pull the bottom plug any more just the right hand screens and the filter.
Not sure if you're asking about your 510 or a 610... this IS the 610 forum right. ?? But on my 610 I pulled the screens on BOTH sides for the first time with almost 4,000 miles on it on my last oil change.. the ones on the LEFT side?? which have there own small cover about the same size as the actual screens were a LITTLE bit dirty... That side is easy and only takes a minute to remove and replace.. When I did the RIGHT side, which is the whole clutch cover, those screens were virtually 100%debris free. Didn't take long but, still not worth the trouble IMHO... I probally won't pul THAT side off again unless I have another reason to until I hit about 10,000 miles after what I saw when I pulled it off that time... Hope this helps..
Nope, the one on the right side (small one under the motor and behind the cover) only needs to be cleaned probably every 3,000 miles first time at 1,000. The paper filter (right side) every oil change along with the double screen on the left. this is on the 610. The 250, 310, 450 and 510 both screen/bag filters are on the "left" under the motor, not the "right". FYI I believe almost all the paper filters are on the right on ALL the smaller bikes.
Whoops, my bad again for not knowing my right from left. I usually do. Brain fade I know where my filters are, even if I forget right from left.
It only takes 10 min or so to remove it, clean the screen and replace it. If it wasn't considered necessary by the folks that built the bike, they probably wouldn't tell you to do it. That said, YMMV. I will keep checking both sides, plus I can monitor that primary nut for issues.
Okay I should be doing something wrong I guess. I have removed all of the bolts around the side cover. Total of 13 of them were removed. I have tried to tap the side cover with plastic hammer. No movement. Through the fron of it there is a place where you ca put a large screw driver to move the cover. But nothing. Th cover appears to be solid. I do not want to push my luck and break things. Any clue how to get the cover off? Are there other things to unbolt? Regards
My story is pretty similar to others. For the first oil change I pulled both the throttle side screen from inside the clutch case and the shifter side screen from the two bolt cover. There were some minor debries but nothing major. I will pull the shifter screen at every oil change and clean along with new paper filter and oil. The clutch side screen will be cleaned only at a service that requires the case to come off.
