It's a pretty new non profit organization that gets Disabled veterans racing. Not just dirt bikes but really any Motorsport. Check out www.raceforthewounded.com I've seen a ton of organizations that give financial assistance and help with counseling or adaptive services. All of which are great. There are even quite a few that get people active but there is nothing like the adrenline in a race. These guys are really helping with healing. Giving them opportunities that may never have been possible. A simple like on their Facebook page and sharing with your friends would help. Of course if you are inclined to do so, you can make donations on their website. I'm sure there are other disabled vets on here too, you can also sign up for this program. Hell tell your other disabled vet buddies that have been depressed and sitting on their ass for years to do something about it and sign up. Once these guys race it gives them something to look forward to again and keeps their minds off of the rest of life. This really is the coolest organization I've found and just wanted to share it.
I have escaped unscathed thus far...but I know some guys who did not. This is an awesome idea/organization. I'm interested in checking them out.
I'm going to tell the guys at the Warrior Transition Unit on Ft Carson and see if they'll talk about this organization at a safety brief. When I actually get a bike I have no problem loaning it out to them. It'd really be the experience of a lifetime. Right now they're trying to get an air shifter for something they're racing in Baja. They also plan on sending people on group rides and to riding schools. One school they're working on is Colin Edwards school in TX. Sounds like it's a go, just waiting on times. For those that don't know the Warrior Transition Unit (WTU). Is where people receive treatment in the Army and some are medically retired from there. Your only job really is to go to appointments. I've seen a lot of people lose their self esteem and rot away in there. This would be a great outlet for them. Again, this organization is nothing short of great
I have a friend down there who is not a rider but he's been there for a long time now. One day we were teaching some Joes Land Nav and he blacked out and fell to the ground. He's never been the same since. Scar tissue on his brain from TBIs. It causes seizures among other issues. It's crazy being down there at the WTU. So many people the country doesnt really see.
Every time I do a demo range I go home thinking is anything going on up there in my head I dont know about.. Especially doing urban breach charges. Real close proximity sometimes. He hasnt gotten a Purple Heart but he has had dinner witht the Bidens haha. We were all joking with him-was that a good thing or bad thing?
They can to the Purple Heart even if he's already been seperated from the Army. A lot of benefits from it that someone in his position should take advantage of.
