hey everyone, i just signed up to get some opinions on what to get. i'm pretty set on getting a husqy so i can get plates on it. i dont really plan on doing much street riding other then connecting trails, or going for a quick blast around town. i'm riding a 02 yz 125 with a 144 kit on it and love it, but its getting hard to find places to ride in southern nj with out getting hassled. i mostly ride trails and am thinking about getting into enduro's or hare scrambles eventually. i'm 5'10" 180 pounds and consider myself and intermediate rider. i plan on buying a bike that is a year or two old.

Can you get a plate for a 300 in NJ??? Have you considered a TE 449? I've got one and have been 110% overjoyed with its performance. The TE 250 is still using the Mikuni EFI which can be a challenge to get tuned properly (I've owned 2 Mikuni EFI Husqvarnas). The 449 comes with Keihin EFI. My 449 EFI has been absolutely flawless out of the crate.

ZCG or ZKH Husqvarna - Enduro Model Year 2006 starting with WR or TE
ZCG or ZKH Husqvarna - Supermoto Model Year 2006 starting with SM or SMR
ZCG or ZKH Husqvarna - Dual Purpose Model Year 2006 starting with TE
Husqvarna - MX Models - CR or TC are OFF ROAD USE ONLY AND ARE NOT
    TITLED NOR REGISTERED.

this is off the nj dmv approved motorcycle manufacturer list that was just updated on 6/13/11. i dont really know why its legal, but its real cool that it is.

i havent really considered any bike bigger then the te 310 or wr 300. i dont see my self needing the extra power. coming from my 125 i'd like to get another light bike. since there are some slight tuning problems with the mikuni FI, and i'm looking to get slightly used, would it be worth getting the carbed one? 09 was the last year? for simplicity sake would the 300 be the better choice? i'm just looking for opinions and the reasoning behind them.

    thanks for the reply

Well, actually, I've owned a WR 300 and can attest that it will rip the plastic off the 449 in virtually every situation. I sold my 300 because it was too much bike for me. I think you'll find the differences between the TE 250 and WR 300 to be huge. The 300 is a monster. It will lug in the woods at low rpm's like a tank and will launch you like a rocketship on the open stuff. The TE 250 is much more subdued. I've owned a 2010 TXC 250 which is the TE without lights and I can say without hesitation that it would be better to compare the WR 300 to the 449 in terms of power and handling. If you want a rocketship that can be a bit challenging to ride fast in the tight woods, go with the 300... it'll lug like a champ, it's tall, it'll climb a tree without blinking, it'll rip the nuts off a KTM 300, and it's EASY to work on. If you want a lighter, slower, better overall handling machine that acts like a small bore 2-stroke at low rev, single trail riding (i.e. needs clutch and throttle work due to lack of stout low end)... then go for the TE 250.

These are 2 totally different engine types making the bikes completely different ... Have you ever rode a big bore 2T machine? It's not a 250 \ 310 4t machine :) ... You probably better ride that 300 and see what you are getting into before a purchase ..

Those 4t machines are gonna go fast and also slow , both speeds easily... They are 4t! ... the 300, you'll just have to work to keep it under control ... Ever hear the term short shift?

Husky 4t machines aren't the lightest and nothing is gonna feel with a 125 in weight .. Their weight is not apparent when riding .... Maybe a 150 Husky is what you might want? The 300 is not a feather weight either ... Its a bored 250, plenty of bottom end and lots out the top ...

That's pretty cool. Does anyone know if this sorta list exists for NY?
I'm thinking about getting a small, light bike (currently have a TE610) and was thinking if I could get a WR125, that would be sweet.

I would go for the 300 myself, I've got an 09 TE510 now and the bike is great. That being said after riding just about everything that the ECEA has to offer, which is in your area, and some recent trips through some "tight" woods in NJ, I was missing my old 2stroke 300. If you don't want to go with the 300 why not the WR250 I think that is in that group also of bikes that you can plate. The simplicity of the 2 stroke and maintenance needs versus the 4strokes is much easier. IMO

I own a 2009 KTM300exc and a TE449. I also have ridden my brothers 2010 WR300 and out of the three bikes i'm quicker on the KTM compared to the WR in racing. My TE449 has the TC449 forks and the rear shock has been reworked. I'm noticably quicker on the TE449 than the other two bikes when racing. The KTM has more torque than the WR but less than the TE. The WR is a little more peaky top end power. but doesn't handle as well as either the KTM or TE. I'm 205lbs 6.1 tall the TE is the winner in most races apart from wet mud. Flick-flak through woods in 1-2 gears its a close call between the KTM and TE. The WR is good but the KTM and TE are better. WR is let down by the OC forks and Sach rear shock on the 2010 bike

    Old Style Husaberg,
300 WR. you will enjoy it, although like most modern scooters it's designed to ride quickly. They are simple and even though some would disagree the suspension is good stock with some clicker work, use more rebound than stock.. Also Husky is fussy about the air pressure in your tires and tire design and sag settings. Lastly trade the Mikuni to your dealer for a Keihn. Cheaper to buy and maintain, grins to ride no doubt.
