I have now replaced my rusted 1979 OR frame with a much better condition 1980 OR frame, and there is a difference between the type of rear brake used. The brake on the 79 frame I have is a floating brake, so the torque arm goes from the brake plate to a bracket on the frame near the footrest which also doubles up as the rear brake pedal mounting bracket.

The 1980 bike uses a different brake plate, and the torque arm is shorter and bolts to a lug on the swinging arm, so a non-floating rear brake.

My question is whether the brake plate designed for the floating system can be used with a non-floating swinging arm. I could quite easily fabricate a suitable torque arm, but the design of the brake plates is different, so I am concered that the floating brake plate should not be used with the non-floating swingarm.

Any thoughts and comments from any of the experts?

i know they change the backing plate do to issues of the hub eating through,
id have to look at the ones i have and see whats needed to make it work.
i think you have to use the 1980 backing plate with the spacer and all.

The 79 and 80 frame can use either type of brake backer.

    The 1980 CR/OR swing-arm is 23 1/4 inches overall. One inch longer swing-arm than the 1979.

You can use a CR style brake backer on a 1980 OR Swing-arm but not vice versa. It will take a one inch longer brake stay arm. I have a brand new NOS 80 brake stay arm at home. I will measure it tonight.

The OR style backer has the spacer embedded/pressed in the plate itself. The CR uses an external spacer with a square style O-ring that let's it float with the backer. Your newer 1980 OR frame and OR swing-arm will accept either style because it has the lower brake stay mount welded into the swing-arm. IF you are using the CR style backer you simply do not use the OR Brake stay mount on the swing-arm. Some say the OR style is more durable, primarily to less moving parts.

The following is a picture of my Works Hybrid 79/80 CR 390 frame. I have a 1979 CR390 Late in Model Year frame with a 1980 OR swingarm ( longer) combined with a 1983 XC 18" rear wheel and brake backer plate and brake stay rod...

    Thanks T

Yes, I was hoping it would be ok to use the brake plate I have with the 80 swing arm.

If you could let me know the dimensions of the torque arm you have, that would be very helpful. Thanks
