Regearing a 2009 TE450 to 13/50 sprockets?

I rode my buddies new 2009 TE450 today. Stock it has 13/47 gearing. To me, first gear seems waaaay too long and tall for slower tighter single track riding in the dirt. We are considering going from a 47T to 50T on the rear sprocket for those dirt rides in the woods we do. We idled our bikes side by side just letting them chug along on a flat road surface and his was about 2-3mph more than my bike with a 50T on the rear, so he definitely wants to re-gear it.

    Question:
With the way the gearbox internal ratios are set up on this bike,
If he goes +3 to a 50-tooth sprocket on the rear, will the bike still be able to go 60mph without revving too high and straining on open stretches of road for five minutes here and there?

Anyone else gone to a 50T on the rear and still ride your TE450 on the street okay? If so, what do you notice pros/cons.

Not sure but if you have the internal gear ratios from the manual, you can input them and the sprocket sizes into this spread sheet and it is very accurate in its speed and RPM ranges ..

06 & 07's came stock with 13-50 gearing, no problem going 60 MPH, a little buzzy, but it wasn't an issue. 06 to present 450\510 have the same internal gearing. Balance out the rim locks & highway travels much smoother.

If the gear ratios are the same as my 2008 manual shows for TE450s, a quick check with this spreed sheet shows at 6000 RPM, 13/47 gearing, you should be running about 59MPH .... This was guessing you have an 18" rear tire also ....

Changing to a 13/50, your speed drops back to 55MPH at 6000....

Upping the RPM to 6500 shows 60MPH with the 13/50 ...

I run my TXC250 at 6000 - 6500 on the street, going 4 -10++ miles one way and it seems OK ... 4G is a little slow and 5-5500 seems like the sweet spot but my chain rattles there :( Pushing up to 7G and it is starting to scream just a little ... I do a lot of twisting on the throttle and jumping off the road all I can along the way to break up the engine RPMs ....

Five minutes stretches at this pace will be just enough to cool your engine off if has been heating up on the trails :)

I changed my front sprocket on my te 510 , which i understand has the same retios to 12th. 47 12 equals 51 13. This is more than 50 but still its ok for short streches on pavement. I use it this way and no problems for 5 minutes around 60mph when connecting trails. With this gearing the bike is great on trails( i almost forgot there is a clutch :-) ). i prefer to change the sprocket, because you can go back fast for when you have a longer faster trip.

That's a nice program with some tweaking for new years and specs.

    THANKS YOU GUYS.

This is very helpful information to pass along. Sounds like 13/50 is a "must do" if he is going to be trailing the bike a lot and also good to know this is how the 2006/2007s came stock, must have been a good reason for it. :)

My understanding from another thread was they are going with the taller (lower gear ratios 13/47 and 15/45 on my bike) gearing now on these newer bikes to pass ceratain noise emission tests at 30mph on the throttle, i.e. not winding as high or producing as much sounds at certain traffic speeds; something like this. I always wondered why they would gear a 6speed dirt bike so high.

Also good to know about the balancing with rim locks. Both of us are having this issue with the feeling of having an oblong tire on the front of the bike bike at 55-60mph. Very good to know there is hope to balance this out a little, nice!

A different brand, but has the same handgrips - Hahaha!

I didn't want to bring it up since this is a Husky site primarily, but the answer is I sold my 2009 Suzuki DRZ400S and sold my 2008 Yamaha WR250F and consolidated to one bike: Beta 450RS. In this case, is proabably not a good direct comparison on final gear ratios in any gear since the TE450 is a close vs. wide ratio trans and the bikes are set up differently in some ways and similar in others. We've been having a ball evaluating both bikes closely. And most importantly, its nice to have quality legal dual sports (dirt bike with a license plate) to ride these days in CA. Just gotta love it. :applause:

Oh, that's cool. I thought you were putting side x side with a TXC or something.

Yes, it is VERY cool to have good street legal bikes right off the show room. Makes life nice no matter where you are.

Going up 3 teeth is a fair amount. I went up 2 teeth from 50 to 52 (06 te 450) and it made a huge difference. By the way after about 600 miles I went back to stock as I bekeive it is the best all round compromise. Once the motor freed upi the stall outs etc became very infrequent so the reversion to stock has turned out to be a good one.

Look at the bottom of the sheet, it has a page 2 that allows 6th gear to be entered...

For sure. I guess the only reason for bringing up CA is how strict its been the last two decades, and how our state was dealing with different laws than the rest of the US in the motor vehicle space. But its evening out a bit more now and a few things have actually opened up with special construction cars, bikes, and now dirt bikes again over the past decade, but we still don't have many of the same type freedoms of states adjacent to us. I hear its even tougher in other countries.

    ghte,
To reconfirm, when you say "went back to stock" does that you went back to a 50-tooth on the rear sprocket?

Im looking for a new 13 tooth front sprocket on ebay for my 09 te450 and i am wondering if there is any difference between buying one claimed to be for a 510. Or how many years back can i get one for an 09 model?

Did your bike come stock with a 13 or 14 front sprocket?
