    Hi,

I have just disassembled the silencer on my WR250-06 (which was quite easy with the help of two cars and their pulleys :) ).

My question: There is some kind of Steel Wool wrapped around the inner pipe? Do I need this? Can I re-use it?

    Thanks!

Are you sure its not fiberglass?

Never seen steel wool on a 2 stroke silencer before but plenty on 4 strokes
You do not need it and at least if you remove it you can clean the perforated core throughly before putting it all back together.

    Thanks,

    I guess its fiberglass

I removed it all, and cleaned the perforated core with brake cleaner and a steel brush.

So, I will just roll on the new silencer packing "tight enough", and just skip the fiberglass-stuff.

    Looks steel to me !
Easy way to find out and thats to set it alight  if it burns its steel .
Be aware it can and will really burn so just throw it as I do not want to be held resposable for you burning your house down :D

    Ok, will try that

What is the reason for having both the steel wool AND silencer packing?
I guess the flame protection is out of the question if it burns...

While you have it apart you might want to clean cone on the output end if its still in there.

Haha I robbed the packing out of my stock WR pipe and "fabricated" a core out of an old spray paint can and then safety wired the packing around it and stuffed it in my girlfriend's Yamaha RT180. I could smell the paint burning off the steel for a while when she rode it. Yuck smelly haha.
