I never did look into it. There are tons of options out there for us. Malcolm and Alexander went to a baja designs led setup on their racing 511's, basically using the quad led setup inside the stock headlight shroud. Those things are powerful and they only consume 42 watts. Johnny Cambell through away all his HID equipment and now runs plain halogen bulbs because there is less shadows. Ty used to use those two lamp HID setups, those look good too. Personal preference is it. I will probably look into using led.

Last year my son and I rode the Midnight Madness (we saw Ty on the trail for like 20 seconds and then his dust) run put on by the Big Bear Trail Riders and we used our stock lighting. Let me tell you the mountains are a real dark place and once it was around 11 PM the stock headlight looked like dull candle lighting the trail. I knew stock lighting was gonna be weak but not that bad. I will look into more as I saw a set up on one of the threads that had a cool looking LED set up.

Oh, if you want something for racing or those rides, 8" lights, I prefer duals. Everything else is for playing around.

that's all I do is play around. Those guys that race at 80-100mph at night might have the equivalent of the sun on their handlebars but they got some big ones!

Hahaha, yea, my gf included. She has won the baja 250 and 500, loves night racing. Me, um no, I'll stick to daylight.

They say its not as scary at night...what you can't see doesn't worry you as much.

Guess that applies to more than racing bikes...

I'd take a look at trailtech and baja designs. They both have some nice products for lighting.

any ideas if the stock light loom would take an osram/philips 65w bulb? all the right ups in road bike mags seem to realy rate them. i was thinking of trying one out.

Use the Piaa bulb I listed above, produces what seems to be twice the light as the stock bulb.

My main bulb has just blown and I can't get the PIAA in the UK. has anyone got any suggestion for a brighter alternative in the UK that won't melt the fitting? (philips, Xenon ???)

Most any HS1 35/35 will work and won't melt the fixture. There are a few LED alternatives that look good like the cyclops. You can use an H4, but only if it 35W or less.

Cheers Tinken, HS1 don't seem that easy to find in the UK but I've just ordered a Philips Vision Moto HS1 from Amazon.
30% extra light if they are to be believed.
In the meantime I'll have to keep 'dazzling' drivers with my full beam!

Tinken. Thanks for the bulb tip. We do a lot of night riding in Phoenix during the summer months, so I'll definately check it out. Would you be able to suggest a specific, reasonably priced, easy to install supplementary LED system for play riding at night?

I'd look at Rigid industries led lamps.
