i recently purchased a Terra and due to the laws in aus the dealer could only sell me the restricted learner motorcycle approved version due to my provisional licence. Was curious as to what the de-restricting process involves if anyone has any knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
It involves replacing the throttle cable holder. This is a picture from the workshop manual which shows the part in place. (this is the 43kw part) This is the same part from the 35kw model The 35kw part limits the rate of travel of the throttle, as well as reducing the maximum throttle opening. Mechanic who replaced the part in my bike didnt make any mention of new map being loaded in the ECU so I think it is just a mechanical change.
I'm pretty sure that the Australian Importer, Paul Feeney Group, won't sell that part to a dealer or to you directly without going through the process they have, which is that they will request a copy of your licence to show that you're not on a restricted licence. I doubt that you'll be able to source the part directly in Australia, however you might find someone overseas where they don't have the 35kw model who will order the 43kw part on your behalf and forward it to you. After the part replacement, the bike rides just like everyone else on this forum describes. It is much less dosile. It wants to leap off the line when the lights go green. It wants you to open the throttle more and hear the exhaust note. It actually makes a real big difference. You'll probably realise some of that distance by getting or making one of the various varieties of booster plug available. I would recommend that mod to anyone who had purchased a TR650. Getting quite a few Aussie TR650 owners now. You might want to put your country/state/city in your profile.
yes i know that if you go through the dealer you have to show your licence however i found the part on another online site so figured i could order one from over there to avoid the dealer however its sounding like a bit of work to install so might have to find an independent mechanic to do it. Yeah i have been looking at the booster plugs what kind are you running in yours? im based just out of sydney in the hawkesbury region, yet to see another terra on the road but its early days for me.
Buy a new part? A part that is exactly the same except for the extra tab? Removing the part and cutting off the tab would be one option. Lot's of work involved. Bending the tab out of the way while on the bike might be a very cheap, easy solution.
Unfortunately, it is not just the tab. The different part versions also locate the cable differently, with the 43kw part locating the cable farther away from the throttle body.
Im in the same boat Whiteo but I wouldn't do it. You won't be covered by insurance and I wouldn't want to risk making a warrantee claim if you have made an illegal modification to your bike. I have been wondering what difference the full power body will make... not long now I've gotta say that the more I ride this bike the more I love it. Well apart from the gearbox which tried to strand me in neutral mid turn yesterday. But overall its a good machine. After riding and racing dirt bikes in NZ (where you don't need a license to ride off road) the weight has been the biggest change for me to deal with. I like the balance of the bike though, I've just had to alter my riding style a tad and slow down a bit which my family appreciates Its still got the goods to snot along the fire trails (even with a governed version) and I have scaled some surprisingly steep tracks as well. If they prove to be long term reliable I think they will become quite sought after.
Didn't take my mechanic too long to change over the plate to full power. I tend to agree with Aaron, if you crash and it is found you are riding a bike that exceeds the power to weight ratio you will be screwed. If you are on your Ps there won't be a huge long wait until you can get it to full power legally. Suck it up and wait like everyone else. The bike is still great in 35kW form
Yes its just pretty bloody annoying that because im 20 years old i have to wait 3 years to get on my full licence.. 1 year on reds (september) 2 years on greens.. leaning toward a booster plug to see what effect that has, im loving the bike too finding it a bit rough around 1st and 2nd when i release the throttle, ive been told that the booster plug fixes this. having the same gear problem as you aaron, however the 1st/2nd change seems to be getting better.
That is a bummer mate, still its pretty good even with the governor. Yes the gear box is my biggest complaint, its ok if you make sure of every shift and don't try to shift too fast but yesterday it was just really weird. It wouldn't go into gear at all until I stopped, let out the clutch again and clicked into first.
yeaah that has happened to me before really have to be careful with your shifts, im used to motocross and enduro bikes which i was always smashing the gears up and down with hardly any travel needed in the lever, however with this bike it needs a long shift, i would recommend adjusting your lever if you havent already because it did make a difference for me im thinking of adjusting it further down myself
Whito, don't your power:weight restrictions finish before you get your full licence ? In Vic I'm pretty sure the restrictions are just for the 12 months, regardless of the period of probation. Regarding the gear problems, you might benefit from sliding the gear shifter off and moving it one groove anticlockwise, which will lower the lever, and therefore you will get more leverage with your boot under the lever. If one groove is too far, and you can't get your boot underneath it comfortably, I found that the Touratech adjustable length folding tip lever has the shifter tip about 1/2 a groove different to the stock.
no unfortunatley in new south wales the LAMS condition is enforced until you are on your full licence.. might have to move to victoria..
I haven't kept up with all the changes in the Ps system here in Tas but it has changed to something like the Vic system maybe. I was restricted to LAMS bike for the 12 months of my Ps, after that was fully licenced, but that was only because I was already fully licenced for car. Otherwise I guess I would have still been waiting for my full motorcycle. The rules are there for a reason. It sounds like you already know how to ride a bike, I have no idea what your road experience is, but they have to draw the line somewhere, and it can be frustrating for those that have more advanced skills than those who have never ridden and are learning to ride the bike as well as develop their road craft at the same time. I would have been happy with the Terra in LAMS trim I only got it changed because I could
