I asked the same the other day. Apparently the HD ones sell for $225 to $300US (with the mounting gear). The still pic quality is good at 5mp. I've seen a couple of wide angle stills and you do get a real wide angle. Reported to be pretty bullet proof too. Still expensive methinks:(

Yeah just checked, good old rip off UK, we are like £299.00 for the same.

I prefer the look/cost and size of this:

The Hero models are offered in two models, both high definition models. Both of them come in a waterproof mounting case, and they come with a starter assortment of camera mounts including a curved helmet mount and a flat surface mount. The HD960 goes for about 170/180 bucks from most places, while the slightly higher resolution one (1080) goes for 300, although I have seen them on sale for as low as 240 dollars just lately. I recently bought the 960 model on-line from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC, but haven't had it out for any shooting as of yet.

    From GoPro's website:

It's not too hard to find the 1080 model on sale for 20% off or so. They're rugged units, although the mounts can break. I know a friend that did a street ride and the camera broke off the mount somewhere. Never found it. But GoPro did send him a replacement camera. Yeah, no shit. I wouldn't expect the same should that happen to you, but that does tell you something about their level of customer service.

The LCD back is nice as it provides a view which helps for aiming. You can also playback video, although the interface is klunky.

I have the Hero 960. My wife got it for me and I used it a few times. The biggest draw back is that it is an MP4 format. My computer does not support MP4 and if I plug it into the PC it just locks up. So I need a new PC that supports MP4 to get it to work. Just having software does not cure it according to my IT guy and what I have read. It plays back direct through the TV real well. I have tried mounting on the top of the helmet, on the side, and even under the visor. I like the side mount but it hangs out a ways. The top is probably the best as far as crashing goes. Under the visor seemed like a good idea until you stand up and look through the bottom of the camera. Not good. The mounts that come with the camera are OK for basic apps, but it is well worth the $20 to buy the bag "O" mounts that they sell. Then you get the side mount and a whole bunch of other elbows and stuff. Have fun with it.

I just bought a 960 but have not rode with it yet. However my son took it to school on the last day and the video quality was exceptional. I picked it up at Best Buy for $145.00. I hope to have it out this weekend to break in the new 144 Walt did for me. Once I figure out the editing side of things I will post some video.

mp4 is a universal standard format. BluRay uses essentially the same format.
