It can and does happen!!, BMW have been forced to recall their 650 due to stalling issue placing rider in imminent danger...... I would arguable this is a lesser risk than the random stalling issue our Husky's have and far easier to rectify. Looks like Canada too. Not finding one for the US. Interesting as I tend to look over the fence at the G650GS/Sertao stuff and did not see a lot of griping about stalling. That said EVERY iteration/version they do of the BMW 650 single has starting and/or stalling issues. http://healthycanadians.gc.ca/recall-alert-rappel-avis/tc/2015/54816r-eng.php BMW issued a recall on the G650GS, and G650GS DAKAR models Report a ConcernStarting date:August 21, 2015Type of communication:RecallSubcategory:MotorcycleNotification type:Safety MfrSystem:EngineUnits affected:92Source of recall:Transport CanadaIdentification number:2015378TC ID number:2015378 Advisory details Affected products Advisory details On certain motorcycles, the engine control unit software which regulates the idle speed may have been incorrectly programmed. Looks like there is one in the US for the 2014. From the ADV rider Sertao thread. Nope. Looks like it's all over. I just pulled this from: http://www.bmwmotorcycles.com/us/en.../en/virtualcenter/index_recall.html¬rack=1 There is one open safety recall for your vehicle. I am curious about the air leak/Manifold clamp that is noted. The very randomness of stalling issues makes me wonder if that is the real culprit.
I just filed a complaint with the FTC. I spoke with the NHTSA and they said to file with them (ftc federal trade commission) and the attorney general of your state. I'm holding off on the AG until I have to. I want the TR650 included in the BMW recall, pestering them and putting the govmnt attack dogs on their heels might get them off their butts. Heck I pay enough taxes they should help us out. FTC (202) 326-2222 fast and easy. Tell em you want in on the BMW Recall listed above. BMW produced this and KTM/Husky/Pierrer Industries signed on,and are all making money or have made money on us. Somebody has to make them cooperate. BMW does not seem to be cooperating with Husky in fulfilling the 10 year service agreement of the sale of Husky by BMW Group.
Most of these stalling issues are a result of manufacturers trying to meet emissions requirements by running as lean as possible and that fail in the direction of lean. When you are operating at the edge of the envelope, variations from nominal are far more noticeable. I would wager that older carbureted systems could tolerate 10% or more off nominal and be okay. Modern systems are probably closer to 2%, though when they do run they really run nice! I think the end game is to make vehicles undrivable yet too complicated to be fixable so everyone has to move to public transportation
Incorrect, early F Series single spark firmware had problems, the final version does not, F Series dual spark was stable as was the 087-09 g650gs. It is only the G650GS/Sertao BMS-E model which has again exhibited the problem and interestingly the firmware fix seems to have been around for a while but as per a conversation with a BMW rep here it seems Dealers were not implementing it just as Husky Dealers were not updating the Terra, but we are looking around for further info at the moment There were a couple of hot start issues which were down to metals in the compression release lever though. What causes stall problems more commonly are faults in the idle actuator.
Yeah, I hear the Amish and Mennonites are being praised for their progressive way of life. Good luck on getting the TR added to the recall. Only hope that BMW doesn't back a truck full of lobby $$$ at the NHTSA to "stall" the wheels of justice.
You can assume the TR650 will not be added and not do anything and have it self fulfill or you can put up a fight to be heard and have a chance.
You must have got a live one at NHTSA telling you to go to FTC on the complaint Dont deal with people at NHTSA, simply file the complaint on line and refer to both the existing TR650 and G650GS complaints, use the complaint number. Also ensure you mention stall when coming to a halt/risk of rear end accident as well as the fact the ECU is the same on the Terra as the G650GS and developed by the same team
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/bmw-recalls-g-650-gs-motorcycles-100115.html Don't know if any of you saw this article, but they aren't recalling very many bikes, according to this reporter.
I've had this exact issue, stalling on the downshift/slowdown. The bike's at 4000 miles, and it started hesitating at 2500 miles. I added a power commander at 3400 miles, with a dyno tune that made a difference, but now the stalling is terrible and I've had to restart while rolling on way too many occasions. Since I've had the aftermarket things done, does anyone recommend I get it back to baseline first before having BMW fiddle with the ECU or Manifold? I worry that the aftermarket adjustments, though minor, will interfere with potential warranty validity.
Good to see, even though you are in Oz lodge an NHTSA complaint just as we all did over the F650GS forks and post the complaint number in the thread here, DOTARS in Canberra who are the real people behind the ACCC recall advise take their lead from NHTSA, I had quite a bit to do with them over the f650gs fork problems and learned a lot re the safety regimes round the world in the process
