Shock oil

Getting ready to rebuild the rear shocks on my 83-500, ITC's and the rear shocks on my 82-430. Just finished building a spring compressor and tested it out-works great first try! My question is what oil do I use in these when I go back together? I have the Ohlins workshop manual and it says to use Husky's auto trans fluid, is that still valid? Also any suggestions on a supplier to purchase seal kits also would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

The Ohlins twin shocks use 10 wt. shock fluid, this includes the Ohlins/Husqvarna ITC shocks. Maxima heavy shock fluid is a quality suspension oil that fits the bill, is made specifically to work with old/vintage shocks like Ohlins and Fox, and is half the price of the Ohlins shock fluid (Also a very good shock oil). I would advise against using anything but suspension grade hydraulic oils (Auto trans fluid, etc.) because the viscosities vary in comparison to suspension grade oils. (Not that suspension oils don't vary, just not as much)

I tried the maxima 3wt in my 82 and it was wayyyy too light, like riding a pogo stick.

Ohlins has a special 5wt oil i use in mine

Thanks alot for the help. One thing I didn't mention was my riding "style" or lack of! 250lbs and non-aggressive but I'm going to try a vintage race next spring. Pretty rare to see my bikes more than a foot off of the ground. Scott
