I need to replace the shocks on the 390 I am rebuilding. The frame is from a 1980 XC390 and I am trying to find out the specs of the shocks that should be fitted.

I believe the overall length from eye to eye should be 17.25 inches but I also need to know the travel of the shock. Please could someone confirm both of these dimensions? Thanks in advance :)

    Murph,
My 79 CR390 has 17-1/4" Ohlins (I believe they are original).
The exposed shaft length is 4-1/4" and they have a 2" bumper.
I would think this would be appropriate for your bike.
    Wasn't the 390 an "OR" in 79? I think the XC's didn't show up until 81.
    Hope this helps,
    Ron

Thanks Ron. As it happens I have just been looking at the Vintage Husky website and it has a copy of the brochure for the 1980 OR390 and it is exactly the frame I have, so I think you are correct. I was told it is an XC frame but now I agree with you, it is an OR frame.

I am pretty sure the shocks on your bike will be the same ones used on the 1980 OR frame, so thank you for your help. Just one question. Is the 4-1/4 inch exposed shaft measured to the top of the bumper or is it not including the bumper at all? Thanks again.

The 4-1/4" did not include the 2" bumper, so the shaft would be 6-1/4"
    with no bumper.
I believe most tracks consider 1/2 of the bumper thickness, as shock travel.
I agree the 80 frame is the same as the 79, except they cut the rear fender loop off on the CR's from 79 on.

I think and I could be wrong, the OR's used Curnutt shocks that were shorter to rake out the front end a bit more.
The OR's got their changes based on input from the desert and Baja racers, like Larry Roeseler (I remember reading that somewhere).
