TE450 08 While trying to take off both left and right side covers, both rear bolts were tight at first but then whatever kind of nut back there has stripped loose. Now the bolts spin without coming out. Can someone look at theirs to see what they are and an idea of how to reach them? With the covers on, I can not see the nuts. I'm sure the nuts and bolts are the same on move new model Huskys.
its a problem with the riv nuts, lots of posts on this. My local GP motos has a riv-nut tool to recrimp/stake the riv nuts, that is the right fix the OEM did not seat them as tight as they should be. We use these in the aerospace industry and the stake on torques are critical. To remove the screws,,,try and get something to secure the rivnut from behind the panel, not easy use imagination?? maybe a long thin straight slot screwdriver or a long chisel end ,,just something to hold the rivnut from spinning. best of luck, R after the screws are out the rivnuts can be retightened/staked just need a tool.
OK, this helps. Ummm, I searched "side panels", "side panel bolts" and a few others but nothing came of those searches. Anyway, thanks.
Can you post some pics of how you solve this so there is a good reference if it affects anyone in the future
Use anti-seize (not loctite) on all of the side panel/radiator shroud screws and resist the urge to overtighten! This helps mitigate or eliminate the screws corroding and seizing into their inserts - especially the ones molded into the gas tank.
I have the same issue. I think I'll try one of my dental tools and see if I can lock the nut to get the bolt out. After MLK weekend. Glad I seen this thread. Thanks

You need to get something inbetween the cover and hold the riv-nut flange, this is never easy, also keeping pulling force on the screw helps. http://www.fjr1300.info/howto/rivnut-tool.html this is the idea once you have access to the riv-nut. Had a similar thing happen but the whole rivet came out. Was in JC Whitney shortly after and they have both standard and metric ones. I used one again just recently after rusted bolt snapped off. I had to drill it out. Bingo, instant threads! Great for your shop besides bikes! Good self presents to go buy and sneek in your shop like other half does!
I've been lax in tagging threads and take full responsibility for you not being able to find the relevant info. This is a good thread, good enough to create a new tag "Rivnut" - something I really am trying to avoid doing - but cannot think of how else to file these types of issues. The rivnuts have been an ongoing problem.
