Side stand foot, folding tip shifter

    Just in case anyone wanted to see. MOD side stand foot for an F650 and the MSR folding tip shifter others have used from a YZ? KX? (Don't remember)

    Does that side stand attachment also increase the overall length of the side stand? My bike leans over sooooooo freakishly much on its stand when parked that I am always wondering if when I return to it...is it going to be laying on the ground! Also, I have short legs and must use the pegs to mount/dismount the bike. Quite scary on something you always expect to come falling over on you!

    I know I can do the hockey puck thing to help....but this is a beautiful new bike and not my old filthy KLR. Does anyone know of an after market attachment that not only widens the side stand foot, but also lengthens it?

    Or....has anyone found another understand that works?

    I also have the MOD sidestand foot. I did find that after a bit of usage, the sidestand got sloppier on it's mount and the MOD started to strike the swingarm. might also be because I removed the left footpeg bracket and refitted it when I put the B&B bashplate on. I had to shave about quarter an inch off the edge of the sidestand foot closest to the swingarm. I do like that MSR shifter but don't know if they're available in Australia.

    I think all you can do is weld in a section of tubing to make it longer. No biggie.

    That's what I did. Added 1 1/2" and now it's a lot better. A machine shop could do it quck for you and it wouldn't cost much. Spray paint it black again. Done.

    And if you're concerned about it being strong enough where welded, put smaller diameter a bit longer tube inside and weld it together. Makes it perfectly safe to mount using pegs.

    Good call...gotta make up some spacers now to test how much I need to add before I start cutting up my kickstand.

    Shifter is from teh 2003 to 2012 Yamaha YZ250 available from MSR and others....I put the MSR part number in another folding shifter thread..

    Your info is what I used when ordering. Only problem was the color (silver) which was easily corrected via blitz black...

    You can turn down the ends of your extension in a lathe so that it goes into the hollow ends of your kickstand after you cut it. It will be very solid that way. Another tip; scribe a vertical marker on the stand before you cut it so you can get the foot angle lined back up to be flush with the ground. Ask me how I know...:banghead:

    Good point, will look much smarter. Needs thicker extension tube though. Whats the preferred location of the extension and recommended length ?

    I added 1 1/2" of actual length with 1/2" extra inside each end of the cuts. I cut below the big spring "D" on the kickstand

    I used a Tube Cutter to make a square cut on the stand and a black iron nipple I had. Just using the piece from the middle of the nipple. And butt welded the pieces together.
    And like Harder says make sure you scribe a center line down the stand before you cut it. Helping aline things just before you weld.
    A Sch 40 Black Nipple has a smaller diameter than our stands...but pretty close. I also made the foot print a little bigger for soft dirt.

    I added maybe 7/8" to mine as I want to make sure than on uneven ground, left higher than the right, that some lean remains. If you are mainly riding on pavement or firm flat gravel, more is good. If you park the bike in the tire groove on a trail, the wheels will always be a bit lower than the adjacent ground so give the stand a little clearance.

    In a moment of weakness, I sprung for the Touratech foot. Pricey but very well made and makes a huge difference in bike stability and footprint. No more unwanted stand pop-up either. BTW, after living with a KLR 650 and Husky TE250 that want to fall over at a gas station unless you face with the slight slope to the left (usually means going to the opposite direction at a fuel pump), or having to turn back into oncoming traffic when pulling to the side of the road with the slightest hint of drainage crown, I am very happy with the Terra lean when parked. It took a bit of getting used to, but I have tried to pull it over and it won't go. I think it is far easier to make a short stand sit higher with a small block of wood with me or commandeer a nearby stone, than it is to make a too tall stand shorter.

    Ugh...wish I had the bike with me today because I just found a nice piece of steel bar stock in the steel scrap bin at work! Do you happen to remember the i.d. and o.d. of your kickstand after you cut it open!?

    The O.D. of Sch 40 Blk pipe is .875" so maybe just a bit more than that.:thumbsup:

    The side stand is 22 mm diameter. But, please don't use bar for the extension; way too heavy out there on the end and could cause the stand to bounce around in the rough. Go with some light weight tube. TIG weld it and you are done!
