http://www.mossmotors.com/SiteGraphics/Pages/Brake_Fluid/page6.html Just finished front and back caliper service/pins/seals/fluid. Used glycol based brake fluid. Anyone try silicone brake fluid?
You can't! Dot 4 is the same or can't be replaced by 5.1. Silicone Dot 5 is strictly for that application and can't be used in Dot 4 or 5.1 or the other way round! The fluids don't mix and the seals neither.
Dot 5.1 supposedly needs to be changed frequently due to absorbing moisture more. Some good high temp racing dot4 like maxima should be a good improvement.
Both Dot 4 and 5.1 (and dot 3) absorb moisture due to being glycol based. I never have failed brake (or hydraulic clutch) parts as I change the fluid on all my bikes at least once a year. When I changed it on the husky after I owned it for about 8 months the fluid was just rank! Don't know what they use OEM but it was bad, specially the clutch side. Dot 5.1 has an higher boiling point, that's why I use that.
seems like alot of effort just to eliminate a refresh every 12-18 months. I find the gycol stuff fine on bikes as the systems sealed but on cars its open vented so it will absorb more moisture.
Motul RBF 660 is the ultimate. its been part of my bullet proof brake system for a long time now. https://www.motul.com/system/produc...inal/RBF_660_Factory_Line_(GB).pdf?1340124817
