I have a small oil leak coming from somewhere around the red cover area of the engine. Is this a known issue? Hmmm maybe its coming from the oil hose with the drain bolt just above the red cover. What should i do to solve this? Tighten the bolts that holds the cover on?
That drain plug directly above as you noted is prone to leaking. Mine used to leak as well until I started putting oil-resistant Teflon tape on the threads of the plug. Another tip is to NOT use brake cleaner on the valve color to clean. Powdercoat is pretty tough stuff, but harsh chemicals like brake cleaner will take the shine away. Simple green and an old tooth brush works pretty well.
I wouldn't go tightening any bolts on the engine cover (unless they were obviously really loose). If a seal or a gasket there has failed and you tighten it further it's probably likely to make the failure worse and cause more leakage. It seems very hard to tell from your picture where the oil is leaking from. What you should do is clean all of the oil off with a rag, and then take the bike out for a short ride and inspect again, so that you can identify the source. Just looking at how widespread that oil appears to be, i'd put my money on there being some leakage around the oil drain line above the engine cover. have you checked around the hose clamp fittings to see if there is any oil accumulating there?
Looking at how the oil has 'blown' around it is very likely to be a leak on the Oil Drain plug and not the Valve cover at all. First picture shows evidence of a drip on the Drain ?? When draining the oil I have never bothered to open up the PITA drain plug and prefer to loosen the rear hose clip instead.
Thanks all! Upon further inspection this morning it is indeed the oil drain thingy. Much easier to remedy than a new gasket. Does Permatex make anything to use in this area? Yamabond?

I think i will try to remove that whole unit and replace it with something better. I think there was a post already on this modification?
I'd try a Trade Tools type shop to be sure everythings going to fit, members have fitted valves, stopcocks, right angle elbows to run the hose behind the radiator etc. or maybe pm glitch_oz
Yeah I noticed a small leak after the first service so I tightened the bung, errr to much! Now I just go for the right side hose clamp.. Never got around to doing that mod. Classic example of an after thought and lucky you caught it before it fell out!
Got all the stuff needed at the local Hydraulic Hose Repair place. Just for a sample http://www.enzed.com.au/ServiceCent...MIicKbveCE1QIVlBePCh1GQAFDEAAYASAAEgIYMPD_BwE They have all the funny metric/ fine-thread fittings etc. Just buy a piece of thick-walled, high temp rubber hose (and cable-tie to something below to keep the weight/ inertia off, not tugging on that hose-mounted block up top.
