Ok, I guess we all have to go through infant mortality, especially with electronic components... I was puttering around in some fairly tough logging trails this morning.. All of a sudden, the speedo hangs at zero.. Odometer and trip meter are working fine... All other lights and readouts on the electronic dash ok.. Checked wiring from the speed sensor on the front wheel to the wiring harness.. All secure.. Disconnected/connected the battery to perhaps reset everything cold... Didn't help.. Any other ideas before I have to schlep it 75mi to the dealer for warranty repair??? Many Thanks, Mike...
That's really odd that disconnecting the battery didn't help It's a common problem and that is always the fix. Did you leave it disconnected for a few minutes? WoodsChick
check the speedo wire again- Manet still in rotor there is a white connector on the speedo wire up by the bars before it connects into the wire harness- mine broke right before that connector- if you have a ohm meter you can check the wire- disconnect at that connector by the handlebars and connect both leads to the connector on the wire. Spin the front wheel- as the magnet goes by the sensor- you should see a connection every time. If that does not happen the wire is bad or the sensor is bad or misaligned. This assumes the magnet is in place obviously. Mine completely died while riding 2 days in the rain- be care full- or reseal it as well. Plastic baggie just for bad rain days? Water got in mine where the seam is horizontally- there is a rubber seam there and there is a light coat of silicone- apparently not good enough didn't hold up well enough.
I only disconnected the battery for a few seconds... I will disconnect it again and leave it off for about five minutes... I did trace the wires from the front wheel sensor all the way back to the big harness behind the light/windscreen... All seems secure. If the wheel sensor was bad, my odometer and tripometer wouldn't be working, correct??? - but they are Mike...
As much as I love the 610 I'm not a big fan of the dash. It's complicated, not user friendly, can't change screens or reset to zero on the fly and by all rights has proved to be kind of hit or miss when it comes to reliability. If mine were giving me problems I wouldn't replace it with another factory dash (even it was under warranty) I would just pony up for a good Trail Tech unit.
Thanks for your replies guys... I disconnected the battery during the first half of the football game. Reconnected it at halftime... Speedo is now working fine. I will take the new dash under advisement, especially if stuff like this continues. Mike...
Right on! Glad it worked out. I had the same issue on this last trip I went on, but it's the first problem I've had with the dash in 5400 miles. The first month I had the bike I spent a rainy and snowy week riding off-road in Nevada and the dash was constantly wet and freezing. I fully expected imminent failure but I experienced not one hiccup on the trip or thereafter til the speedo thing a week or so ago. WoodsChick
