Is there any intrest in discussing the merits of two springs per shock or the one spring which seems to me was used later on the blue ohlins shocks. I don't think I have seen single springs on the gold ones. I found the single spring quite heavy and have never mounted one.

    Fran,
From what i understand the internal valving is a different design, from
the 1982 & older piggy back Ohlins shocks, so there's no need for
    the dual shock springs.
Sorry i don't have full size scans of these.

Thanks, It sure appears my 83 didn't have two springs just the one I set up myself. The spring I am holding must be a heavier progressive one which I seem to have a few of and I seem to expect to see. When they went to the white frame they did get the swingarm and frame shock mount points equidistant from the pivot, if I recall correctly. Last set I had refurbished the guy said they are very similar to the pds, poition sensing damping of some relatively recent stuff.

Ohlins had a major hand in developing the ITC, and also the PDS (the way the story was told to me - Ohlins got screwed on the PDS contract). It's no surprise they're similar. In some ways, I think the ITC is just as good as what we're getting on the newest bikes. Even the 81/82 models had fantastic rear suspension. Now those 40mm forks, that's another matter...

Anyway, gold series all had dual springs, and I'm not aware of any "white bikes" that came with a dual spring set-up stock. They all had singles, but some were straight rates (like my 83 250WR) and some were progressives, either white or yellow (a little heavier than the whites). I'm not a big fan of progressive springs, in general, but do feel they're better on the ITC.

On the ITC I like the fixed spring guide at the bottom of the shock body that helps keep the spring from wearing the finish off. The Gold series all had that awful guide ring between the short spring and long (squeaka-squeaka) and all the paint gets rubbed off pretty quickly. It's tough to find a set of golds that aren't all rusty there.

    I recently bought
the progressive springs (yellow) and they seem fine
I only checked after that you can make up the required 330mm lenght with two springs- I see all the new ohlins come with 2 springs, so if i had my chance again id probably try 2 springs... just sorting out which spring rates is the headache...
