I have an 09 TXC250. How many of you have disabled the safety device that forces you to engage the clutch in order to start the bike. Is this simple to do? First bike I have owned that has this, and I would like to disable it. As I recall it is required on street legal dual sports?

It is really easy. All you need to do is connect the two wires that go up to the clutch.

I may be overlooking something, but why would you want this?

I guess I have been so used to not having it, that it seems odd or annoying at times. I am curious if anyone else has disabled this feature?

Yep, disable on all bikes. Its crazy annoying.

Short out the wires that go to your clutch, wrap them tightly and cable tie behind headlight.

Easier to do it in the shop, than in the middle of nowhere after breaking a clutch lever or perch.:) Ken

A lot of people have disabled the switch. I wouldn't have disabled it if it wasn't needed when the bike was in neutral, but since you have to hold in the clutch even when in neutral I disabled it. The big reason for me is to free up that hand to use the manual decompression lever when needed, but also for the general annoyance factor.

Follow the lead back to where it mates with a joining unit (under the tank) and disable there rather than shorting at the clutch. it is a simple task.

So just disconnect it from the "joining unit"?

after a small crash I could not get the electric start to work. I had to kick start it every time. Later i found out the wires were disconnected. I soldered them together and tucked them away. Who knows you might be in a position where u need to be in first gear and use the started to pull you out.

Yep just reverse the wires at the joining unit and forget.

Perhaps it was fixed in '09. The '08 owner's manual says you don't need to hold the clutch in when it's in neutral, but it does. Probably was a software mistake in '08 and was fixed in '09.

2009 TXC250...I definitely need to hold the clutch in, even when in neutral, in order to start the bike. Maybe some dealerships disable this when they do the power up mods. :excuseme:

The reason i know I dont is a couple of times on the trail while talking to my friends Ive leaned over on the bars and hit the starter button with my forearm. And it cranked.

That's interesting. Do you have a wire running to your clutch?

Pulling the clutch in when starting reduces the loading on the starter & battery especially on a cold engine so it's a good habit irrespective of the clutch switch...
