HI! I've had my TR650 Strada for about 8 months now just over 1400miles and hoping you can help with a little starting issue that just happened today. Starter? Spark plug? It started up after 4 tries and runs fine, it's just skittish on the startup ??? Here is the link to a 20second video I just took when I got home from work, which thankfully it started afte leaving the gym; so this happened twice today. The only difference in today vs every other time I started it up was that when leaving work I started it (no issue) and stood there to check my email on my phone for about 1-2minutes while it idled. Then it died off idle. Normally I always just start it, and go. Any help appreciated thanks! I posted the 20 second video while home in my garage: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/zlojysgzsoqk28q/beEP0kfeOx
OK, this will need some investigation, but I will tell you what happened to my bike. When I dumped it, the handlebar went into the sand. When I tried starting it, it would not go, after a few tries it caught, then when I check during the day I get similar issues. First impression is a faulty/cheesy starter button, that ,may just be a design error. Then, with seat off, at the starter relay, I notice oddities and issues. Haven't had enough time to look into further, I am limited on standing time. My bike did not have any issues up until this point, but now exhibits the dreaded no start issue. I believe we all have a weak link in this wiring, and do not think it is major. Our bikes may need a better ground in one part of the circuit, or we got some bad switches.
I started it right up last night before bed, and then again today. No issues. Maybe I shouldn't have let it idle for 2minutes, i'll try to resimulate it and see if it dies off of a 2min idle. ???
It's the kick stand switch and the neutral switch--I'm positive. Take the bike off the kick stand, pull in the clutch, and it will fire right off every time. It has something to do with the neutral switch not fully engaging (the green light is not a good indication). I know it sounds crazy, but I did a good bit of experimentation on it. Look up my old thread Strada Struggling to Start (SSS) Syndrome to see all the details.
. Next - did you watch the video and it sounds familiar? Thanks so much, I'll look into that asap and check out your link out and next time (IF) it does it I'll try that. Maybe that's why sometimes the Neutral green light flickers so much which appears to be a fine line of actually being in N or not.
Bingo. The flicker is a dead give away. I GUARANTEE it will always start just fine if the kickstand is up and the clutch is pulled in.
I agree. Also, go look in your owners manual. It says to keep the clutch pulled during the starting procedure even AFTER it has been put in neutral. My bike acted much like yours did in the video, but it only happened one time to me. I am pretty sure it was because it was not completely in neutral AND also that I did not have the clutch pulled. I keep the clutch pulled all the time now.
Thanks! It rocks to know we can team up to go thru the forums to find out little things like this - I have never really started it with the clutch in bec I'm always in N in my garage and my elementary school I work at a few miles away. I'll keep that in mind going forward and report back if it happens again so others can learn too.
Wow- I duplicated this today 2 different times and scenarios and both times after the flicker/N hesitation fire start, I tried a pulled clutch/kickstand start and it started up with zero hesitation both times. Good looking out Next/Ogre. I'll be in touch and of course keep monitoring it for future reference.
Hey Next you are right on man- Im within my first year, you think it's worth it to travel to the Husky dealer an hour away to get it fixed, or just leave it? The only thing that stinks is the green neutral only comes on half the time and I like idling it a little bit, and having a N anyway.
Don't know about the dealer. Sorry. I would call and tell them what is up. This seems to be a pretty common thing on these bikes. I feel like one guy brought his in and the dealer said it was not "technically" malfunctioning, but I honestly don't remember where I read that (might be in the Strada Struggling to Start thread). Base on the manual it looks like this is a known quirk. If you decide to call your dealer please let us know what they say. If it is fixable I might take my bike in. I am so busy with work these days I rarely ride, and haven't even thought about going to see the dealer.
You got it - I will post some info but I wont go unless it keeps acting up. So far since you did the research it's been fine for the past 3 days. Much appreciative and we'll see, at least it's not a real issue and doesn't stop from riding. -Tim
I've had a problem like that, try starting and it fires and dies fires and dies, I hear a click sometimes when it does this . I think the decompression vale is getting stuck? Not sure
Well, I have to eat crow on this one. For quite a while being sure that I had the clutch pulled seemed to work, but over the past week mine has become a real bitch to start. For a few days it would turn over, and then die. I would then flip the side stand up and it would fire. For the past few days it won't start even with the side stand up without taking multiple tries. I have now even disabled the side stand switch but it still takes 3-6 tries to get the bike to fire. I have put the battery on a charger to see if it is low, but it is showing fully charged. I "think" the clutch switch is functioning as it wont turn over when its in gear, but will turn over when I pull the clutch...it just does not want to fire.
Had my bike do something similar. Listen for fuel pump, pull cap if you have to. Mine would turn over and not start but again, no priming. After multiple tries, walked away and took about 15 min, called dealer, went back tried again with dealer on the phone and it started. Never did it again. Tried all the usual stuff, clutch, side stand etc. No dash warning. Still scratching my head on that one.....
Mine did something similar the other day, 50-55f outside. I started her up and putted 15 seconds down the drive way to the parents house to grab a tool and then started her up again to putt back to my house. She started fine both times. Then I put her on the lift and adjusted the suspension for a two up ride. When I went out to start her up again she wouldn't catch, tried twice both time holding down the starter button longer than I felt comfortable with and no luck. Third time I gave her a twist of throttle while hitting the starter (I know I know FI) and she started right up. Stopped for about 20 mins after 30 mins of riding and she started right up fine. Then stopped again for lunch and was in the restaurant for over an hour and I had to again give her a twist of throttle to start up. I am not sure what to think. My only experiences with difficulty starting while cold have been related to tight intake valves so that's what I am thinking I might be facing, especially because I have been riding with a group of sport bikes and have been kinda heavy on the throttle and using the full rage of RPMs lately. Which makes me sick to my stomach because I had them checked($$$$) around 1500 miles ago and they were in spec and I do not want to drop another fat wad of cash to get them adjusted and don't feel confident enough to dissemble the entire bike and do it myself. Upon seeing this thread I went out to see how she would start up after sitting for two days in the cold garage. It's 30f out and she started right up with only a tid-bit of hesitation, maybe the third or fourth turn of the starter but with no need of throttle, which seemed like a failry normal start up. Go figure I really really really really don't want it to be tight valves, but I am not sure what else to think. Any ideas guys? Are there any other tight valves symptoms I should be check before I start assuming the worst case scenario?
