I have a frequent, but not 'always' engine noise that I can't figure out. A clatter that sounds like valve-train noise. I suspect it may be coming from the auto-decompression device, but disassembling it doesn't show any problems or cure it. The clearances are as follows:

    Left int .005
    Left exh .008

    Right int .004
    Right exh .006

The noise only occurs at higher rpms when riding real hard. It doesn't do it until the engine is at full temperature, and even then, doesn't do it when putting around slow at low rpms.

Even though the right side clearances are a healthy (not tight) .004 and .006, (minimums) do you think maybe when the engine is hot it could be 'tightening up' the clearances and causing the clatter?

Weirdest thing is, it doesn't always make the noise. It comes and goes... some rides it's there, some rides it's not. This has been happening on and off since about the 400 mile point. Current mileage is 1500. Also, no effect whatsoever on power or performance. It 'runs' just fine.

    Ideas?

possibly the cam chain tensioner, even if it looks ok sometimes the grooves are a little worn and allow it to slip or rattle about a bit.
i had a similar noise and it didnt go away even after a new piston, cam chain and valve adjustment, plus checking the decompressor. (i was doing maintenance at the time not replacing them due to the noise).

anyhow i read probably here about the tensioner and just replaced it. noise gone ! check the teeth of it maybe to see?

Your problems are more than likely unique to you. Not many people ride Huskys as fast as you. Do you think if I lost about 50lbs my bike will go that fast? Enjoyed riding with you at Enoree

Thanks Wadman. Yes, your bike will go faster, and you don't even have to lose any weight. Just turn that thingy on the right handlebar a little farther, then hold it there. ;)

Wanna go again tommorow? (Saturday) I'll be there...
