I have a 2009 wr300. My title says motorcycle. I have a headlight and taillight with the speedometor it came with and was wanting to make the bike street legal so I can have no problem taking short trips from trail to trail or to do some enduros or dual sport events which require a plate. Has anyone from NY made their wr300 or wr250 street legal? What did you have to do to the bike before you went to DMV? I'm told because I have a title that says Motorcycle I should be good to go but that always comes from someone that hasn't actually done it themselves. Can someone that has legally registered their wr300 in NY please give me the straight answer. Thanks in advance for the info.

Nj here with street legal wr300. No issues. If your title does not say anything about off road use only, just get insurance for it and go register. If they deny registration than u think about alternative ways.

In nj, there is a list of "approved" motos. I was searching for similar list in ny, and found nothing of sort.

Also, If I remember correctly, inspection in ny is required after the registration. So any issues with inspection, you can deal with them later...or not at all

I have a buddy with a new wr 450 f and he threw mirrors on it and when he takes it out puts his plate off his xr 400 on it and, has ridden past cops and they don't think anything of it , His luck could run out if they run his plate but his time on the street is so short u rarely see cops just uses it to connect the trails and to go to the trails ,

I live in New York and have had multiple Husky WR's street registered and titled. As ks9mm said, inspection comes after registration in NY, so if you have a motorcycle title you're set to register. What you do after that is up to you. I had a full Baja Designs DS kit on my '00 WR250, but my other WR's and my present Husaberg TE250, I would just do headlight, taillight and brake light. A certain shop is lenient about inspection for me.

Some people you talk to might confuse you, as there used to be a NY DMV program that let you register non-compliant off road motorcycles, if you added DOT equipment and submitted photos. This program was ended in December, 2000. I know this because I bought my '00 WR250 in December and it had a restricted off road MSO and I missed the deadline, to register it under this program. I ended up registering it in Vermont for one year and applying for a NY registration, which I got. My '02 and '09 Huskys had unrestricted MSO's and registering was no problem.

This happens so much here that encounters with LEO's have been unpleasant even with all required equipment, responsible riding, and full cooperation. Things like this have made liscensed off road riders guilty until proven innocent.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to look into the enduro light kit for blinkers or whatever else needed.

I don't see any DS kits for my bike. What exactly will I need besides blinkers, horn and switch for blinkers. I have the headlight and taillight hooked up.

Keep in mind, registration and plate has nothing to do with blinkers. Blinkers is last stage, for inspection.

Get plates first, than worry about other stuff. I have AA battery powered horn...passes inspection.

Well guess either way I have to wait until April 30. NY motorcycle inspection ends April 30. So if I got it now I would have to pay for an extra year even though there is one month left. NY is such a pain.

I put a Tusk lighting kit on my 02. They don't list one, but I got one for a non E-start KTM. This gives you fine thread brake switch fitting. I run the headlight off the lighting coil, and all the rest runs off a supplied rechargeable battery pack i mounted in the air box. Tail/brake and turn signals are LED and last a really long time on a charge. Completely plug and play harness all I needed to do was fab mounts for the front turn signals and horn. $200 is too steep for some, I wired my XR the cheaper way with sourced components but I liked this set up much better and was well worth the investment to me. I did exactly what you did. Though I wired everything directly into the bike so it's always on

NJ - unregistered bike w/ fake tags and no isurance = bike impound, loss of DL license for 1 year manditory, heavy fines. What if you wreck and need help. Copes will come and run the plates on the bike, then you find yourself with injury and summons and no bike. Not a Good Idea.
