Ok it's not the first time someone has had a spinning insert in their tank. Why??? Galvanic corrosion. A steel bolt in a brass insert spells disaster. The steel bolt will corrode far faster than the insert causing the bolt to seize in the insert. What a pain in the ass. I actually had one seize got it out and bonded the insert back in. 3 months later the tank is now leaking fuel. Gmx tank here I come. It's retarded that I should need to pull the bolts every month to clean the threads and reapply a corrosion resistant substance. My solution.... How about use a bolt made from UHMW or some other non metalic material? UHMW is super strong. I have a rod of it I use as a damm punch. Worst case you ez out the bolt if ypu snap the head off.
Actually, some anti-seize compound will stop that. Usually a one-time application when new (to you) is all that is required. I have never had issue after the first application. Often people over-tighten them which then galls the brass threads and then starts the downhill slide to spinning. The nylon bolts would work great since you cant overtighten them. Cam.
Hey guys... I've been bitten by the spinning insert dilemma. I changed my tank shrouds (white to red) on the new 310 a few weeks back and had to pry one of the inserts out. It's the middle bolt so ok to run without it for now. Just putting new tank shrouds on the 510 tonight (one was busted up) and the front bolt on both sides was seized! Sh!t, OK.... I need a quick fix. Can I just glue them back in? What's the chances of a leaking tank in future? I'm sure I saw a guy make some new brass threaded inserts in a thread a while back but can't find it now. Anyway, I don't have time for that. Advice appreciated, cheers.
I used the inserts shown which are made for wood and a compound such as no-ox to protect against corrosion.
Thanks mate. I'll try to get some soon. I just did a quick fix on the 510 and it failed... !!! The inserts at the very front of the fuel tank are the ones that pulled out. I tried to use an M10 bolt straight into the tank and it was working nicely. The bolt was the right size as was making its own thread... and then... Pop! The bolt was slightly too long and broke through. Yep, fuel leak. I now have shorter screws siliconed in with an o-ring. I hope it will hold up. By the way, my tank seems swollen and too big for the plastics. Hhmm
never mind, took the tank off just doing some maintainence as i havent started it in a year, found a dirty big crack in the underside of the tank, no idea how its happened . . .
Wanted to resurrect this thread as I have the insert problem on my TE310. I ended up cutting the head of the bolt off, now I'm stuck with an insert I can't remove. Whats the best way to get that thing out? I realize I can make more problems with gas leaks etc if not careful. Then need to find another insert that I can fit in the hole and JB weld?

Wow, there is alot of info on this prob. Searched and found 1 or 2 threads, should have searched on rivnuts, I guess. Thanks for the info. I'm thinking leave that nut alone, run without it, splooge some antisieze on the rest and call it a day.
