I'll start out this report with two things in mind. To tell my tale of adventure getting this bike and to kind of one shot many questions that I've run into in the last 24 hours. Any input for a new SM owner would really be appreciated and yes, I've used the search function 1,000 times to get to this point.

I found a 2009 SM 610 with 386 miles on the odometer up in Philadelphia at a very fair price. I immediately call the dude and spoke with him and said I'll take it. One problem though, just paid off the lien and was waiting on the title. So I sent a deposit and waited almost a month before the bank sent it to him.

Road trip to Philly from Northern Virginia... ugghhh... I thought about taking the train and riding it home. The dude said it had never been laid down and was good to go. In the back of my mind, I thought I better drive up and trailer it back home and go over it before I take an epic journey on it.

I drove up to north Philly and met the dude in a back ally in kind of skid row part of town. The dude finally showed up 15 minutes late and I finally got to look the bike over. Two flat ties, a low speed lay down on the left side, but she fired right up and ran like a champ. The dude was straight up for the most part but this bike has never seen any maintenance since the day it was sold in '09. Sold! Time to load her up and head home...

Loaded up in skid row, headed south!

A little history about myself: I've been riding for 34 years and have logged just over 300,000 miles. Started off with a RD400, graduated to Ninjas, GSXRs, BMWs, Harleys, etc. Kind of tried them all over the years. When I look back, the RD 400 with inta-wheelie was probably the most fun out of the heard. I'm hoping the SM610 will fill that void in my life. So, I turned 50 this year and said, F it, time to find one and make it happen.

Here she is all cleaned up after years of grime, dust, spider turds, etc. all over her. Washing her today, three stickers came off. Damn... I'm not starting off very well.

    Q & A time.

Here's a pick of the shifter damaged. I was unable to find any real good threads that showed people upgrading the shifter. If you can point me in any direction, I would appreciate it. Otherwise, I'm calling Hall's next week for a large order, this being one of them.

M!@#$@R F*&^%3R! Everything I read on this possessed kickstand was correct. I barely bumped the bike and over she went breaking the clutch. Perfect... BAd situation #2. I'm posting this pic because I'm asking if the toe kick out is bent or not? I'm not sure how to fix this, but this is a must. Unacceptable to have a bike so prone to drop.

More evidence of a low speed lay down...

Stickers are pealing up. I really wanted the flat black or graphite version so I may switch out the plastics. THis set of plastics it pretty beat up from people scuffing them with their boots getting off and on it. I tried to clean up them but the scuffs are really bad and everywhere, seriously every piece of plastic.

Stock emissions. Is there a "how to" thread on this mod to help it breath? I have ridden her exactly 1 mile before the tip over and clutch lever break and the power was not there to to roost.

I know she needs a can to breath better but I kind of like the muffler tip with the Husky logo! Motostano the only place to get a slip on and is Leo Vance the only reasonable option here?

I was going to order a new clutch lever when I call Hall's but it may be a good time to upgrade these as well. I was kicking around the idea of Zeta Armor Handguards (in red) and the Zeta XC Hand Protectors w/ Flashers in black. Touratech has some interesting lever that are made out of plastic. Anyone try these? http://www.touratech-usa.com/Store/...Enduro-Lever-Set-Gray-for-Brembo-Brake-Clutch Might be a good option to store under the seat in case of emergency?

Demon kickstand: Do I just grind off this tit kick out the spring at an angle? If I read correctly, this will make the kick stand act as a normal kickstand, except you have to remember to kick it up before riding?

Last pic... This connector is located up by the triple tree. Any clue what it's for?

Thanks for reading and any help would be awesome. I got a great deal on this bike and with a little TLC and some pimping, I'll get her standing tall and hope to post some ride reports.

Cut the nubbin off of the kickstand bolt, that will help the bike to stay upright. I wonder if the left side lay down came as a courtesy of that stock kick stand nubbin. When my bike was just a few days old I had to catch it as it headed to the ground because the kickstand retracted itself while warming up in the driveway. That was immediately followed by 2 minutes with the hacksaw.

The connector is for the ibeat diagnostic tool. You can use ibeat to adjust the fuel injection, read real time streaming data of the bike runnning and read and clear any fault codes. You need a laptop that is 32 bit and the ibeat program and adapter plug. Scott at Semco designs out of Boise Idaho sells the plug and cable or a package of the plug cable and software. You can google semco designs and then click products. You then just shoot him an email of what you need.

Looks like a good find. As for the mufflers drill out the rivets and uncork them / remove the cat and run them.

You're a patient fellow- had I driven all that way only to learn the guy lied about it never having been dropped I'd have had plenty to say to him about that. Hope there's nothing else he didn't share. I know you know it, but change the oil and filters ASAP.

On slip ons... I went w/ a FMF Powercore and have been very pleased. Mine's a 630. A search will yield a few options and feedback. Good luck and nice bike- that's the one I wanted when I was on the hunt but couldn't find one in decent condition, at a decent price, at the time...so got the 630.

When you place your Hall order, get some rocker cover gaskets. In fact, go over the maintenance schedule and buy the required misc gaskets.

Buy some Motion Pro angled feeler gauges. I bought the three sizes they offered ($5 a piece). You never know what you may need for your next bike.

You might want to think about a APE manual cam chain tensioner.

    Use the HF563 oil filters.

    Hey there NorVAnian :D

    1. First lets talk about transportation straps use, it looks like you squated the bike a bit much
When I transport my 610 I use the ratchet straps on the front down tube forks behind the front mask in a slight forward angle, the back ones I hook to the little bottom frame triangles in the footpegs area in a slight backward angle
I don't use a front wheel chock, the straps are the only thing that hold the bike upright, it is ROCK solid with almost zero compressing of the forks and shock, try it...you might like it ;)

    2. Yes, your bike stand toe kick is bent, it suppose to go out, sideways from the bike

    3. Emission canister how too; http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/08-emissions-canister.2017/

    4. If you don't feel like buying the LeoVince then you can always do this to the OEM can; http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/de-catting-a-std-09-610.16972/

    5. 610 (EFI 08 and up) Power up and JD jetting power surge...look it up

    6. Footpegs rubber inserts; take them out, it feels better

That's all I've got for now, congrats on the newused 610, I think you'll love it

Not sure what the rules are here about sending people to other boards, but the 610 thread at SMJ is the best resource I've found as far as the internet. Pay attention to Goosedog's posts.

Zip-Ty racing makes the shifter tip you want. Don't worry about the scuff in the stator cover. Keep an eye on the pinch bolt on the shifter lever, it'll need periodic tightening and removal and relief.

It's only got 386 miles on it? THREE HUNDRED EIGHTY SIX?!? Sweet score, dude! Now get ready for everything to fall off of it. BLUE LOCTITE is your best friend. CHECK. EVERY. FASTENER. Also, you've gotta give these engines a thousand miles or so to loosen up and start running like they should. Everybody says it about a low mileage rig, but in this case it truly isn't broken in yet.

The Leo exhaust is worth a few small horsepower. The power gain is secondary to the massive weight reduction.

http://www.touratech-usa.com/Store/...Enduro-Lever-Set-Gray-for-Brembo-Brake-Clutch won't work on your bike. If you want different levers you can use an Arc lever (from Uptite) for the clutch (you'll have to ream the pivot bore a tad because it's for TE) and there isn't anything "known" for the brake lever unless you change your perches out for '06 FZ1, then you can use Pazzo levers. It won't matter much anyway once you put handguards on. I went with Cycra straight handguards and CF Zeta protectors with the signals in them similar to what you mentioned. I've crashed the hell outta my SM in all kinds of terrain and not broken a single lever. Oh, use the triple-mount setup, not the bar-clamp mount. It helps with steering feedback and helps cut down a lot of the bar buzz.

Scuffing on the left buddy peg...Hell, that's just from turning left. Heh.

Get rid of the little dingus on the sidestand pivot bolt. And when you get tired of a cup of gas drooling all over the bike after you fill it up and park it, put a sidestand for a 630 on it, it's a couple inches longer and the bike will stand a lot straighter.

If you have other bikes, you'll ride them less and less in favor of this one. Trust me...

JonXX, thanks for the input and threads to reference. I just bought another 1/2 pint of blue LockTite. I'm applying it to every bolt that I take off and re-secure. Yes, only 386, here's a pic of the dash after I put 1 mile on and it fell in the garage and broke the clutch lever. I put a 100 miles on her today.

I changed the oil filter and oil today. Here's what the magnetic drain plug looked like. There were definitely metal shards on it but no too bad.

The oil filter wasn't too bad, aside from just being dark/dirty.

I'm documenting all of this with many pics. If you guys see anything that I missed, please chime in. Placing another parts order this week. Next weekend, I hope to flush the radiator. I have to search around for what the best coolant would be for this bike.

Again, thank you for all the help.

I run engine ice. Works good and its biodegradable. So is No toil oil filter oil, good stuff!
BTW- oil drain plug looks normal for 1st change.
