you might look for a mark like this - on the cam gears they will go parallel with the valve cover gasket surface or look on an orange bike site

Does the FC have the same TDC locating bolt that the FE350, and the 350 EXC-f have?

If you're not familiar with it, there's a bolt in the crankcase that has a thick washer. With the bolt removed, you can look through the hole as you slowly cycle the engine, until you see a spot the tip of the bolt can stick into. Thread the bolt in so that it locks the crank. This is when the engine is at TDC.

Just don't forget to put the washer back on when reinstalling the bolt after you're done your valve check! ;)

The bolt and washer are part numbers 2 and 3 in this pic. If you have a parts PDF (or hard copy) for your FC, you should be able to check if the same exists for that bike.

Do you really need TDC for checking?? As long as the valves are close and in the rested state on the cam, you can take your measurement. It's only when re-shimming you need TDC.
