    I picked up a second set of wheels for when I dual sport the bike. I don't like to run my race knobbys on the asphalt because they wear so fast. Undecided as to if I want to run a more street specific tire like the Avon Distanzia or a more dirt oriented tire like the Pirelli MT21. My question is, I already picked up a 14 countershaft to use for DS purposes, if I run a 48 or 49 rear sprocket, would I be able to switch wheels and the countershaft and not have to adjust the chain? Will the 250 pull 14-48 gearing? 13-50 is stock. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

    My 2006 TE250 has plenty of power (for me).

    These combinations have the same chain length and would not move you wheel at all
    13/50 -> 14/49, 15/48, 16/47

    Adding a tooth to either the front or back would bring the rear wheel forward 1/2 link. Links are about 5/8" apart so that would be 5/16th that the wheel would be more forward if you added a tooth to either gear.

    Conversely having 1 less tooth on either gear would send the rear axle farther back about 5/16".

    So if your rear axle has the room to slide back 5/16" then using the 14/48 combination would work. And as previously stated the 14/49 combination should not move the rear axle at all.

    Here are the ratios:
    50/13 = 3.85
    49/14 = 3.5... which is 10% taller than the 13/50 stock.
    48/14 = 3.43... which is 12% taller than the 13/50 stock.

    Another possibility might be a 15/48 which would not move your axle, have a 3.2 ratio, which would be 20% taller than the 13/50 stock gearing.

    I've run 15-50 on my TE250 before. This combo reduces RPM by about 1000 in 6th for a given speed, compared to 13-50 stock. IIRC I can cruise at 50mph at about 6450rpm with 15-50 gearing.

    I've tried to turn my 2011 TE310 into a dual sport, biggest issue is the factory gearing inside the gearbox- the first 5 gears are totally designed for off road work single trail stuff these bikes were built solely for enduro work and that is where they are brilliant no question about that ! in 6th the revs drop 500rpm, I am trying the gearing with 14 front to 40 rear and that gives me about 95 kmh at 6400 rpm or in USA lingo about 55mph, this is ok but I would not want to run these bikes at any higher rpm for a prolonged period considering they have less than 1 qrt/ I ltr of oil in the sump- not good-they are definitely not designed for sitting at highway speeds for long periods--DETONATION ANYONE ? So I tried buying 15 tooth front sprocket and I did get one but guess what ? the 15 tooth will not fit on with the chain on it --it hits the housing on the clutch so No go there- so the biggest fr sprocket is 14 only- and the smallest rear I could find was 40 tooth so THAT'S IT FOLKS !! No more options- I just spent $ 800 on another set of wheels and tyres too-also what I found is that I now need to change both sprockets and the chain and wheels when changing between the dirt set up and the road set up- which is a lot of mucking around- because with this gearing the chain is a lot different in length. So to turn these into dual sport is Very Hard and at the end of the day Not economically a good way to go- I feel your pain my man !Good Luck with it-

    I ordered a 14 for my 13 TE310 and it was the wrong sprocket. The 13 tooth fits close so not sure if a 14 will fit. I think they are all interchangeable. I use 2 sets of wheels and end up changing the chain because the stock chain was too short. I just made marks on my swing arm for quick reference on the chain slack. I run the 50 for single track and the 40 for dual sport. I run a 12 or 13 front . Still trying to dial it in for the areas I ride.

    anyway i suppose to buy a new chain if i want to put 13/43-46 instead of 13/50 that i have now? =(

    I would like to try a 14/38 just for fun. I think it is possible to find a 38 tooth. I will let you know if the 14 tooth fits.

    40 rear sprocket was the lowest number I could get in Australia, 38 would be great if they are available ?
